New York városának vezetése közegészségügyi veszélyhelyzetet hirdetett a majomhimlő terjedése miatt helyi idő szerint szombaton, a várost a járvány gócpontjának nevezve.
A metropolisz akár 150 ezer lakója lehet veszélyeztetett – idézte a brit The Guardian online kiadása Eric Adams polgármestert és Ashwin Vasan egészségügyi vezetőt. A veszélyhelyzet bejelentése lehetővé teszi, hogy a fertőzés terjedésének lassítására sürgősségi rendeleteket adjanak ki és intézkedéseket hajtsanak végre a városi egészségügyi törvény alapján.
Az elmúlt két napban New York állam kormányzója, Kathy Hochul katasztrófahelyzetet hirdetett, az állam egészségügyi hivatala a majomhimlőt a közegészségügyet közvetlenül fenyegető veszélynek nevezte.
New York államban péntekig 1345 esetet regisztráltak, a második legtöbb fertőzést, 799-et Kaliforniában igazolták az amerikai járványügyi központ (CDC) adatai alapján.
Az ENSZ Egészségügyi Világszervezete (WHO) globális egészségügyi veszélyhelyzetnek nyilvánította a majomhimlőt július 23-án. Csütörtökön San Francisco polgármestere szükségállapotot hirdetett az esetek növekvő száma miatt.
A nemrég még ritka betegség Közép- és Nyugat Afrika egyes részein évtizedek óta létezik, de májusig nem volt ismert, hogy Afrikán kívül is okozott volna nagyobb járványt. Májusban Európában, Észak-Amerikában és más területeken regisztrálták járványok kitörését.
Azóta majdnem 80 ország több mint 22 ezer esetét jelentették, Afrikában – mindenek előtt Nigériában, és Kongóban – nagyjából 75 haláleset gyanúja merült fel. Pénteken Brazília és Spanyolország jelentett egy-egy olyan halálozást, mely a majomhimlőhöz köthető. Spanyolországban szombaton egy második halálozás is történt.
A majomhimlőt okozó vírus bőrfelületek hosszan tartó érintkezésével, ágynemű, törölköző és ruházat közös használatával terjed.
A jelenlegi járványban azonosított vírus ritkán vezet halálozáshoz, a fertőzöttek általában néhány hét alatt meggyógyulnak, azonban a vírus okozta bőrelváltozások és hólyagok fájdalmasak. A kórokozó a sérülékenyebb – többek között legyengült immunrendszerű emberek és várandós nők – esetében kelt aggodalmat.
