Összecsapások törtek ki hétfőn a kenyai rendőrség és a kormányellenes tüntetők között Nairobiban, tizenegy ember életét vesztette, és többen megsebesültek, köztük több tucatnyi rendőr – közölte a kelet-afrikai ország rendőrsége és a kormányzati fenntartású Emberi Jogok Kenyai Nemzeti Bizottsága (KNCHR) jogvédő szervezet.
A tüntetők gumiabroncsokat égettek, és kövekkel dobálták meg a rendőröket, akik válaszul könnygázt és éles lőszert vetettek be ellenük. Az ország 47 megyéjéből 17-ben tüntetések folynak.
A kenyai fővárosba vezető főbb útvonalakat lezárták, a legtöbb üzlet bezárt, a hatóságok a legszigorúbb intézkedésekkel próbálnak véget vetni a tüntetésnek.
A július 7-i tüntetés napja, a Saba Saba (szuahéli nyelven hét-hét) fontos dátum Kenya történelmében: 35 évvel ezelőtt ezen a napon zajlottak az első nagyszabású tüntetések az országban.
A tömeg akkor is a hivatalban lévő elnök ellen tiltakozott, követelve az egypártrendszerből a többpárti demokráciába való átmenetet, ami végül 1992-ben valósult meg.
A rendőrség hétfőn nem engedte be Nairobi belvárosába a közlekedési járműveket, a gyalogosok többségét is visszafordította, és csak az elengedhetetlen munkát végző személyek számára engedélyezte a belépést. A tavalyi tüntetések alatt ostrom alá vett parlamenthez vezető utakat a rendőrök drótakadállyal kerítették el.
A kenyai belügyminiszter vasárnap előre kijelentette, hogy a kormány nem fogja tolerálni az erőszakos tüntetéseket, és rendőri erőket fognak bevetni a közbiztonság fenntartása érdekében. A miniszter egy hónappal korábban arra utasította rendőröket, hogy lőjenek rá bárkire, aki a tüntetés alatt megpróbálja megközelíteni a rendőrkapitányságokat.
Geoffry Ruku közigazgatási miniszter felszólította az állami alkalmazottakat, hogy hétfőn mindannyian menjenek be dolgozni, mert a tüntetések nem akadályozhatják a közszolgáltatások biztosítását.
A kenyai fiatalok más csoportokkal kiegészülve hetek óta tüntetnek a rendőri brutalitás és a rossz kormányzás miatt, illetve William Ruto kenyai elnök lemondását követelik, akit korrupcióval vádolnak és a megélhetési költségek drasztikus emeléséért hibáztatnak.

A biztonsági erők ismét éles lőszert vetettek be tüntetők ellen csütörtökön Mianmarban, és legkevesebb hat embert megöltek. Nemzetközi jogvédő szervezetek szerint a hatóságok harctéri fegyvereket vetnek be a civilek ellen.
A katonai kormány szóvivője bejelentette, hogy korrupció gyanújával is nyomoznak az ország volt vezetője, a hivatalától megfosztott és őrizetbe vett Aung Szan Szú Kjí ellen.
A biztonsági erők az ország középső részén lévő Miaing városban öt, a legnagyobb városban, Rangunban pedig egy embert lőttek le azok közül, akik dacolva a hatóságok brutalitásával, csütörtökön is tüntettek az utcákon a katonai vezetés ellen, amely erőszakos hatalomátvételt hajtott végre február elején – jelentette a helyi média és hírügynökségek szemtanúk közlése alapján.
Miaingban egy rendőrőrs előtt tüntettek többen, őrizetbe vett társaik szabadon engedését követelve, amikor a biztonságiak előbb könnygázt és gumilövedékeket vetettek be ellenük, majd éles lőszerrel rájuk lőttek, kifejezetten az első sorban lévőket célba véve – mondta egy szemtanú a dpa hírügynökség tudósítójának. Rangun egyik keleti agglomerációjában mintegy százan tüntettek, amikor éles lőszerrel megöltek közülük egyet, két másikat pedig megsebesítettek – mondta egy másik szemtanú szintén a dpa-nak. Ezek az esetek éppen azt megelőzően történtek, hogy a katonai junta központi döntéshozó testülete, a Min Aung Hlaing tábornok vezette Állami Közigazgatási Tanács sajtóértekezletet tartott a fővárosban, Najpjidóban.
A biztonsági erők már csaknem hetven ember halálát okozták a junta ellen tüntetők közül, és 1900-at őrizetbe vettek egy jogvédő szervezetnek, a Politikai Foglyokat Támogató Egyesületnek a közlése szerint.
Az Állami Közigazgatási Tanács sajtóértekezletén egy katonai szóvivő bejelentette: a korábbi vádakon túl azzal is gyanúsítják Aung Szan Szú Kjít, hogy mint az ország vezetője, törvénytelenül fogadott el hatszázezer dollár értékű kenőpénzt és aranyat. Szú Kjí ellen már folyik per különböző bűncselekmények vádjával. Egy dandártábornok pedig közölte: Vin Mjint elmozdított elnököt is korrupcióval vádolják, valamint azzal, hogy nyomást gyakorolt a választási bizottságra a parlamenti választások után annak érdekében, hogy ne vegye figyelembe a hadsereg panaszait a választási szabálytalanságokról. A Reuters hírügynökség szerint a katonai vezetés mindeddig most mondta ki legkonkrétabban, hogy mivel vádolja az ország hatalomból eltávolított civil vezetőit.
Jogvédők azzal vádolják a biztonsági erőket, hogy egyre inkább használ harctéri fegyvereket és taktikát a tüntetők, nevezetesen békés tüntetők, sőt, járókelők ellen szerte az országban, és szisztematikusan gyilkolja őket. Úgy jutottak ezekre a következtetésekre, hogy átvizsgáltak több, mint ötven videofelvételt ilyen esetekről. Még bírósági ítélet nélküli, önkényes kivégzések is történtek a felvételek tanúsága szerint – állítják. Joanne Mariner, az Amnesty International válságelemző és bizonyítékgyűjtő csoportjának vezetője azt mondta: ezeket a gyilkosságokat nem önkontrolljukat elvesztő, önkényesen cselekvő és rossz döntést hozó katonák hajtják végre, hanem érzéketlen, lelkiismeretlen, emberiesség elleni bűncselekményeket már korábban is elkövető parancsnokok tervelik ki, és katonáik hajtják végre, gyakran a nyílt színen. A katonai szóvivő a csütörtöki sajtóértekezleten ezekre a vádakra reagálva azt mondta: a biztonsági erők fegyelmezettek, és csak abban az esetben használják fegyvereiket, ha szükséges.
A mianmari zavargásoknak nem kellene nyugtalanítaniuk a nemzetközi közösséget, és a Nyugat csupán feltételezésekkel él, amelyek hamisak – szögezte le. A hadsereg tiszteli az ország szomszédait és a nemzetközi közösséget, de ragaszkodik céljai eléréséhez. Tisztelik a sajtószabadságot is; csak azokat az újságírókat tartóztatták le, akik szították a zavargásokat – tette hozzá.

A tiltakozók közül eddig már hárman haltak meg, az első halálos áldozat egy húszéves nő volt, akit pénteken lőttek le a rendőrök. A hatóságok pénteken még cáfolták, hogy a rendőrök éles lőszert is bevetettek volna.
