Több ezer résztvevővel palesztinpárti tüntetést tartottak szombaton Washingtinban a Fehér Ház körül, tiltakozva Joe Biden gázai palesztinokat érintő politikája ellen.
A „vörös vonal” tüntetésnek nevezett megmozdulás résztvevői egyebek között azt követelték, hogy az Egyesült Államok állítsa le a katonai segítséget Izrael számára. A demonstrálók részben vörös színű ruhát viselve, körbekerítették egy több mint három kilométer hosszú vörös szalaggal az elnöki rezidenciát.
A vörös szalag Joe Biden közelmúltbeli kijelentésére utalt, amiben az elnök úgy nyilatkozott, hogy az izraeli hadsereg Rafáh dél-gázai városban zajló hadművelete nem lépte át azt a „vörös vonalat”, ami amerikai katonai szállítások leállítását vonná magával.
A tüntetők transzparensei között volt olyan, amelyik Joe Bident népirtással vádolta a háborúban meghalt palesztin civilek miatt, más feliratok a „szabad Palesztina” megteremtésének követeléséről szóltak.
A túlnyomóan békés megmozdulás résztvevőinek egy része a Fehér Ház közelében álló szobrokat rongált meg és szennyezett be vörös festékkel. A tüntetés miatt Washington belvárosának központi részén komoly hatósági készültség volt szombaton napközben.
Joe Biden elnök a tüntetés ideje alatt Párizsban tartózkodott, és Emmanuel Macron francia elnökkel tárgyalt, egyebek között az Izrael és a Hamász közötti konfliktusról.
