Donald Trump amerikai elnök szerdán arra figyelmeztetett, hogy amennyiben az iráni rezsim továbbra is támadásokat intéz Katar energetikai létesítményei ellen, az Egyesült Államok „hatalmas erővel megsemmisíti” a világ legnagyobb földgázkészletével rendelkező South Pars gázmező teljes területét – amely Irán és Katar közös tulajdonában áll.
Az amerikai elnök kijelentésének előzményeként Teherán szerdán megtámadott egy kulcsfontosságú energetikai létesítményt Katarban, válaszul Izrael a South Pars gázmező iráni részét célzó támadásaira, ami a konfliktus éles eszkalációját jelzi, és az energiaárak megugrását eredményezte – írja a CNBC.
A South Pars elleni támadással Izrael első alkalommal vette célba az iráni földgáztermelési infrastruktúrát a február 28-án kezdődött konfliktus óta.
Donald Trump tagadta, hogy előzetesen tudott volna Izrael támadásáról, visszautasítva azokat a jelentéseket, amelyek szerint a csapást az amerikai kormányzattal egyeztették és jóváhagyták. „Az Egyesült Államok semmit sem tudott erről a konkrét támadásról, és Katar semmilyen módon nem vett részt benne, sőt nem is volt tudomása arról, hogy ez meg fog történni” – írta az amerikai elnök szerdán a közösségi oldalán.
