Himanta Biszva Szárma elmondta, a rendőrség hajnalban indított nagyszabású razziát és mind ez idáig 1039 embert tartóztattak le, hozzátéve, hogy ez a szám várhatóan tovább nő majd.
Az ország ezen részén a mostani a második letartóztatási hullám az ügyben: az államban februárban 4000 embert tartóztattak le, köztük az összeadott gyerekek szüleit és azokat az állami tisztségviselőket is, akik lehetővé tették a kiskorúak közötti házasságok létrejöttét.
Hivanta Biszva Szárma államminiszter korábban azt hangoztatta, a küzdelem célja, hogy 2026-ra teljesen eltűnjön a gyermekházasság Asszámban.
Indiában 18 év a törvényes házasságkötési kor, ám gyermekek millióit – különösen a szegényebb régiókban – ennél sokkal korábban kényszerítik házasságba. Sok család a nagyobb anyagi biztonság reményében adja férjhez vagy nősíti meg gyermekét.
A gyermekházasságok áldozatai általában lánygyerekek, akik férjhez menetelük után nem járhatnak többé iskolába, a korai házasságkötést pedig rendszerint korai terhességek követik, melyek nem ritkán fizikai és pszichés problémákkal járnak.
A legfelsőbb bíróság 2017-ben mérföldkőnek számító ítéletet hozott, melyben kimondták, hogy a 18 év alatti feleséggel folytatott házasélet nemi erőszaknak minősül. Indiában az ENSZ adatai szerint több mint 220 millió házas kiskorú él.
