A testvére és a Human Rights Watch nevű civil jogvédő szervezet szerint a korrupciót és az emberi jogok megsértését kritizáló tweetjei miatt ítéltek halálra egy nyugalmazott tanárt Szaúd-Arábiában – írja a CNN.
Az 54 éves Muhammad al-Ghamdit tavaly tartóztatták le, a szaúd-arábiai terrorizmusellenes törvény alapján ítélték el „a király vagy a trónörökös vallást vagy igazságot aláásó módon történő jellemzése”, „terrorista ideológia támogatása”, „terrorista szervezettel való kommunikáció” és „terrorista bűncselekmény végrehajtásának szándékával elkövetett hamis hírek közzétételéért”.
Ez öt darab tweetet jelent, amelyekben al-Ghamdi az országban uralkodó korrupciós helyzetre és az emberi jogok megsértésére panaszkodott. A brit emberi jogi szervezet, az ALQST egyik vezetője, Lina Alhathloul szerint az ítélettel azt az „egyértelmű és baljós” üzenetet küldte a rezsim, hogy „senki sincs biztonságban, és akár egy tweet is megölhet”.
Al-Ghamdi testvére egy ismert ellenzéki aktivista, aki önkéntes száműzetésben él az Egyesült Királyságban. A sajtónak azt nyilatkozta, úgy érzi, hogy a testvérére rótt súlyos ítélet részben az ő büntetése is. „A szaúdi hatóságok többször utasítottak, hogy térjek vissza Szaúd-Arábiába, de én ezt elutasítottam. Nagyon valószínű, hogy ez a halálos ítélet a testvérem ellen az én tevékenységemért való megtorlás is. Máskülönben a vádjai nem jártak volna ilyen súlyos büntetéssel” – mondta.
Idén a civil szervezetek jelentései alapján eddig 92 embert végeztek ki Szaúd-Arábiában, tavaly összesen 148-at (ez duplája volt a 2021-ben dokumentált kivégzéseknek).
Nem ez az első alkalom, hogy valakit Twitter-bejegyzések miatt ítélnek halálra az országban. Januárban a 65 éves Avad al-Karnit, egy prominens reformpárti jogászprofesszort ítéltek halálra, mert – az ítélet indoklása szerint – a Twitter-fiókját és a WhatsAppot a királysággal szemben „ellenséges” hírek megosztására használta. Tavaly augusztusban 34 év börtönre ítéltek egy nőt, mert emberi jogi aktivisták posztjait osztotta meg a Twitteren. Az egyetemista lány a nők autóvezetéshez való jogáról is posztolt. Heteken belül egy másik nőt is elítéltek, ő 45 éves büntetést kapott, szintén néhány kritikus hangvételű tweet miatt.
Szaúd-Arábia igyekszik nemzetközi szinten modernizálódó képet sugározni magáról, ezt a technológiába, infrastruktúrába, sportba és szórakozásba való befektetésekkel, valamint ezek intenzív kommunikációjával próbálják elérni. A stratégia keretében a királyság egyre nagyobb részesedést szerez vezető nyugati techcégekben, ma már a Metától a Twitteren át a Google-ig egy csomó nagyvállalatban birtokolnak jelentés részvénycsomagot.
Mióta Elon Musk megvásárolta a Twittert (amit közben át is nevezett X-re), Szaúd-Arábia lett a cég második legnagyobb befektetője. A rendszeresen a szólásszabadság mellett kampányoló Musk eddig semmilyen formában nem reagált arra, hogy a platform egyik legnagyobb részvényesének számító országban embereket végeznek ki, vagy ítélnek évtizedes börtönbüntetésre néhány tweet miatt.

Halálra ítélt csütörtökön egy algériai bíróság 49 embert azért, mert részt vettek egy szándékos gyújtogatással meggyanúsított férfi brutális meglincselésében.
Tavaly augusztusban az észak-algériai Tizi Uzuban gyilkolták meg a 38 éves Dzsamal Benszmailt. A bűntény előtt röviddel a férfit erdőtűz okozásának gyanújával őrizetbe vették, és be akarták vinni a rendőrőrsre. Az akkoriban Algéria több tartományában pusztító hatalmas erdőtüzek miatt dühös helyiek ennek hírét vették, és nagy tömeg vette körbe a férfit szállító rendőrségi furgont.
A feldühödött emberek kirángatták a gyanúsítottat a járműből, ütlegelni kezdték, majd elevenen megégették. A borzalmas esetről a közösségi médiában is megjelentek felvételek, több fiatal saját magát fényképezte a holttest mellett. A lincselésről készült fotók villámgyorsan elterjedtek az interneten, és az eset hatalmas felháborodást keltett.
A 49 halálra ítélt büntetése a gyakorlatban életfogytig tartó börtönbüntetést jelent, mert Algériában – bár a büntető törvénykönyvből nem törölték a halálbüntetést – 1993-ban felfüggesztették a kivégzések végrehajtását. Az ügyben további 28 vádlottat kettőtől tíz évig terjedő börtönbüntetésre ítéltek, 17 embert pedig felmentettek.
Algériában 2021 augusztusában legkevesebb 90 ember halt meg egy hét leforgása alatt az óriási területeken tomboló erdőtüzekben. A hatóságok több embert őrizetbe vettek szándékos gyújtogatás gyanújával.
