Tombol az Iota névre keresztelt hurrikán Közép- és Dél-Amerikában. A hurrikán okozta földcsuszamlások házakat döntöttek romba az észak-nicaraguai Matagalpa régió hegyvidéki területén. Az Iota széles körű pusztítást vitt véghez az országban, a házak mellett hidakat rombolt le, fákat csavart ki, villanyoszlopokat döntött ki, és megzavarta a távközlést. Több tízezer embert kiköltöztettek otthonából. A vihar a térség több országát sem kímélte.
Az Iota hétfőn besorolása szerint négyes kategóriájú hurrikánként csapott le Nicaragua karib-tengeri partvidéki részére, óránként 250 kilométeres sebességű széllökésekkel, később azonban vesztett erejéből.
Hétfőn éjjel földcsuszamlás is sújtotta a térséget, mely után számítani kell sárlavinára, életveszélyes villám- és folyóáradásra – írja az ABC News.
Matagalpa régióban legkevesebben 16-an haltak meg a földcsuszamlások következtében.
Két gyerek akkor halt meg, amikor egy folyón át akartak kelni. Több mint 114 ezren áram, 47 ezren víz nélkül maradtak.
