A Telecom Egypt Kairó belvárosában álló tízemeletes épületében történt katasztrófában négy dolgozó életét vesztette és legkevesebb 26-an megsérültek hétfőn.
A sérültek közül sokan füstmérgezést szenvedtek. A tüzet még aznap sikerült megfékezni, de a telefonközpontban keletkezett károk miatt még kedden napközben is országos fennakadások voltak a távközlésben és az internetszolgáltatásban. Amr Ahmet Talaat kommunikációs és információs miniszter keddi közleményében azt ígérte, hogy a szolgáltatásokat 24 órán belül helyreállítják.
Az egészségügyi minisztérium arra az esetre, ha egyes kormányzóságokban nem sikerülne a mentőszolgálat fővonalát elérni, alternatív telefonszámokat közölt, amelyeken szintén hívni lehet a szolgálatokat. A Telecom Egypt közleményében együttérzését fejezte ki áldozatok családtagjainak, és felajánlotta számukra támogatását. A tűz a digitális banki szolgáltatásokban is fennakadásokat okozott lakossági bejelentések szerint, és rövid időre a légi forgalmat is érintette. A MENA egyiptomi hírügynökség jelentése szerint az első vizsgálatok azt állapították meg, hogy a tüzet rövidzárlat okozta.

Porig égett Kairóban, az egyiptomi fővárosban az arab világ legrangosabb, nyolcvan éve alapított filmstúdiója, az al-Ahrám szombatra virradóra. Az épületben a katasztrófa idején nem tartózkodott senki – jelentették különböző hírportálok és az AFP hírügynökség.
A lángok három környező épületre is átterjedtek, de az embereket onnan is még időben sikerült kimenekíteni, ők az éjszakát az utcán töltötték. Többeket a helyszínen el kellett látniuk a mentőknek a belélegzett füst miatt.
Egyiptomban gyakoriak a halálos tűzesetek a tűzvédelmi szabályok be nem tartása, valamint a tűzoltók és a mentők lassú kiérkezése miatt.
A helyi média beszámolója szerint a tűz előtt 24 órával fejezték be a stúdióban egy olyan televíziós sorozat forgatását, amely a muszlim böjti hónapra készült. A ramadán múlt hétfőn kezdődött el, és ebben az időszakban Egyiptomban és az arab világ további részein is csúcsokat döntenek a tévés nézettségi mutatók.
A tűz keletkezésének oka egyelőre nem ismert, a tűzoltóknak több mint hat órára volt szükségük a lángok megfékezéséhez.
Az al-Ahrám filmstúdiót 1944-ben alapították, és 27 ezer négyzetméteren folyt benne a munka.
Az ötvenes években Egyiptom a világ harmadik legnagyobb filmgyártója volt, az al-Ahrámban számtalan mozifilm és televíziós sorozat készült.

A szakszerűtlen építkezés és a karbantartás hiánya miatt gyakoriak az épületösszeomlások az egyiptomi nyomornegyedekben és a szegényebb városrészekben.
Az ország kormánya az elmúlt években megpróbálta visszaszorítani az illegális építkezéseket a fővárosban, eddig azonban nem járt sikerrel, továbbra is egész városrészeket húznak fel engedély nélküli, vörös téglából.
