A támadók ezt követően mentek oda a paphoz, és vették el karóráját, nyakláncait, jegygyűrűjét és papi keresztjét. A támadásban senki nem sérült meg, a nyomozók viszont még nem bukkantak rá az elkövetőkre.
Whitehead úgy kommentálta az esetet: „látszik, hogyan cselekszik az ördög”, és 50 ezer dollárt ajánlott nyomravezetői díjnak.
A megtámadott pap egyébként megosztóan fényűző életet él: a NYT szerint rendszeresen dizájner ruhákban tart miséket, és egy Rolls-Royce-t vezet. Whitehead jó kapcsolatot ápol egyébként a helyi polgármesterrel is, akinek júniusban viszont megpróbálta elnyerni a pozícióját – sikertelenül.
