A kormányzói hivatal közleménye szerint a balesetet a hirtelen szélváltozás okozta.
A ballon kemény leszállást próbált végrehajtani Aksaray tartományban, de a pilóta kiesett a kosárból. A lába beleakadt egy kötélbe, és beszorult a kosár alá – írta Mehmet Ali Kumbuzoglu, Aksaray kormányzója.

A baleset még május 11-én, vasárnap reggel történt a Mexikóban megrendezett fesztiválon. Négy ember meghalt és egy ember súlyosan megsérült, amikor egy hőlégballon lezuhant a sivatagban az arizonai Eloyban vasárnap reggel – közölte a helyi rendőrkapitányság.
A baleset Pinal megye sivatagos területen történt, mintegy öt mérföldre északra a várostól, helyi idő szerint reggel 7.30-kor – közölte az eloyi rendőrség.
Eloy polgármestere az ABC News-nak megerősítette, hogy összesen 13 ember tartózkodott a hőlégballonban a baleset idején – nyolc ejtőernyős, négy utas és egy pilóta.
Szemtanúk szerint a baleset közvetlenül azután történt, hogy az ejtőernyősök kiszálltak a hőlégballonból, mely ezt követően fel-alá repült, végül pedig nagy erővel becsapódott a talajba.
Egy embert a baleset helyszínén halottnak nyilvánítottak, a másik három áldozat a kórházban halt meg, egy ötödik személy pedig kritikus állapotban került kórházba.
A hatóságok jelenleg is vizsgálják, mi lehetett az oka a hőlégballon meghibásodásának.
