Napok óta készülnek a floridaiak a pusztító erejű Milton hurrikán érkezésére, melynek mostanra már halálos áldozatai is vannak.
A legtöbben bedeszkázták az ablakaikat és homokzsákokkal vették körbe ingatlanukat, egy férfi viszont ennél is tovább ment és rendhagyó módját választotta a védekezésnek.
A Spectrum Bay News 9 hírcsatorna arról számolt be, hogy egyik nézője, egy bizonyos Mohammed Nijem leszíjazta családi házát, nehogy elfújja azt a hurrikánnal érkező, akár 250 kilométer/órás szél – vette észre a 24.hu. Fotót is közöltek a szokatlan megoldásról:

A helyi idő szerint szerdán késő estére várt hurrikánt megelőző esők és helyi viharokban kialakult forgószelek több helyen károkat is okoztak a floridai félszigeten, köztük lakóépületek is megsemmisültek. A Milton hurrikánt megelőző intézkedések részeként Florida területén mintegy 6 millió embert érint kitelepítési intézkedés.
A hatóságok előzetesen arra figyelmeztették a lakosságot, hogy aki otthonában marad, az életét kockáztatja. Elsősorban a tengerparti és a tengeren közvetlen összeköttetésben álló vizek közelében élőknek kellett elhagyniuk lakásaikat, mert a hurrikán akár 3-4 méter magas szökőárral öntheti el az ingatlanokat. A legsúlyosabb károkat a Tampa-öbölben és környékén, valamint Sarasotában várják. A hurrikánt a szerda délutáni órákban 3-as fokozatú viharrá mérséklődött, de az illetékesek szerint ez nem csökkenti számottevően a károkozás várható mértékét és a szökőár magasságát. A hurrikánnal együtt akár 300 milliméter csapadék is érkezhet Florida középső részére.
A Szövetségi Vészhelyzet Kezelési Ügynökség igazgatója szerdán bejelentette, hogy 1200 szakembert küldtek a vihar által veszélyeztetett államba. A hurrikán várható középpontjának útjában fekvő Sarasota megye hivatalos közösségi oldalán szerdán a késő délutáni órákban figyelmeztetést adott ki, hogy már senki ne induljon útnak, ne tartózkodjon a szabadban, hanem keressen menedéket. A friss szakértői számítások szerint a várhatóan 3-as erősségű hurrikánnak az épületek többsége képes lesz ellenállni. Joe Biden elnök a helyzetről tartott tájékoztatóján úgy fogalmazott, hogy az évszázad viharának néz ki a közelgő Milton hurrikán. Az elnök arra szólított fel mindenkit, hogy kövesse a floridai hatóságok utasításait, mert élet és halál kérdéséről van szó. Joe Biden a közelgő vihar miatt kedden elhalasztotta németországi és angolai búcsúlátogatását. Joe Biden demokrata elnök és Ron DeSantis republikánus kormányzó a védekezésről és a kárelhárításra való felkészülésről telefonon egyeztetett. A vihar veszélyét növeli, hogy az újabb vihar által fenyegetett floridai térség egy részét súlyosan érintette a két héttel korábbi Helene hurrikán, és minden törmeléket még nem tudtak eltávolítani, azokat pedig a Milton hurrikán szele sodorhatja magával további kockázatos helyzeteket kialakítva.

Újabb trópusi vihar formálódott a Mexikói-öbölben, amit Miltonnak keresztelt el az amerikai Nemzeti Hurrikánközpont (National Hurricane Center – NHC). A vihar Florida felé tart, az előrejelzések szerint útközben hurrikánná is erősödhet, mire jövő hét szerda-csütörtök magasságában eléri az állam partjait.
Az újabb vihar alig több mint egy hét után követi a Helene nevű hurrikánt, amely hatalmas pusztítást végzett az USA délkeleti részén, több mint 200 ember halálát okozva, de a hatóságok még mindig százakat keresnek.
