Évek óta nem tapasztalt súlyosságú összecsapások törtek ki csütörtökre virradó éjjel Észak-Írországban. A zavargások miatt csütörtökön rendkívüli ülésre hívták össze a húsvéti szünetét töltő belfasti parlamentet.
Az észak-írországi közgyűlés sürgősségi ülése előtt Belfast utcáin újra folytatódott az erőszak, elloptak és felgyújtottak egy buszt, valamint egy fotóst is megtámadtak. Több mint 40 rendőr sérült meg.
A rendőrség szerint a buszt molotovkoktélokkal dobálták meg a nyugat-belfasti Lanark Way és a Shankill Road találkozásánál, miközben köveket dobáltak a tisztekre, és a közelben egy sajtófotóst is bántalmaztak. A zavargásban 500 fő vett részt.
A szerda esti jelenteket az EU-Brexit megállapodás, az észak-ír protokoll, illetve a Bobby Storey temetésén történt állítólagos jogsértések miatt törtek ki.
Hónapok óta nagy a feszültség a brexit miatt, amely kereskedelmi határt létesít az Ír-tengeren.
Boris Johnson miniszterelnök elítélte az erőszakot. A Twitteren a következőket írta:
Mélységesen aggasztanak az észak-írországi erőszakos megmozdulások. A nézeteltérések megoldásának módja a párbeszéd, nem pedig az erőszak vagy a bűncselekmény.

A Translink busztársaság vezérigazgatója szerint a sofőr nem sérült meg. Elmondta, hogy az incidens előtt minden utas leszállt a buszról, és hogy a környéken minden szolgáltatást felfüggesztettek.
