Moszkva műholdrombolórakéta-kísérletet hajtott végre szerda reggel – közölte este John Raymond tábornok, az amerikai űrparancsnokság vezetője.
Közleményében a tábornok leszögezte: „az Egyesült Államok készen áll és elkötelezett, hogy elrettentse az agressziót, és megvédje a nemzetet, szövetségeseinket és az Egyesült Államok érdekeit a világűrben elkövetett ellenséges cselekedetektől”.
Raymond tábornok hangsúlyozta, hogy a szerdai kísérlet bizonyíték „Oroszország álszent javaslataira a világűrben történő fegyverzetkorlátozásra, miközben egyértelműen nem áll szándékában leállítani űrfegyverkezési programját”. Oroszország mellett az Egyesült Államok és Kína is igyekszik kiterjeszteni fegyverkezési programját a világűrre. Szakértők szerint a műholdakat megsemmisítő fegyverzetek azért is veszélyesek, mert a széthulló műholdak részei, más tárgyakkal is ütközve, lövedékként csapódhatnak be a Föld légkörébe.
