Egy hete tombol tűzvész Namíbia legismertebb nemzeti parkjában, ahol már számos vadállat elpusztult a lángok miatt, és több tízezer állat élőhelye van veszélyben. Az oltás segítésére több mint ötszáz katonát vezényeltek a térségbe – közölte a namíbiai elnöki hivatal, írja az MTI.



A tájékoztatás szerint az Etosha Nemzeti Park területének mintegy 30 százalékát perzselte fel eddig a múlt hétfőn keletkezett tűz. Pontos számokat nem tudnak, de bizonyos, hogy több vadállat is elpusztult. A lángok településekre is átterjedtek a park közelében, de emberi sérülésekről nem érkeztek jelentések.



Lucia Witbooi namíbiai alelnök elmondta, a lángok gyors terjedését a kiszáradt növényzet és az erős szél is elősegíti, az országban most van az év legszárazabb időszaka. A tűz óriási veszélyt jelent az állatvilágra – tette hozzá.



A több mint 22 ezer négyzetkilométer területű Etosha Nemzeti Park az egyik legjelentősebb természetvédelmi terület Afrikában. Több száz vadállatfaj élőhelye, köztük a különösen veszélyeztetett keskenyszájú orrszarvúé. A park ismert nevezetessége az a mintegy 130 kilométer hosszú és 50 kilométer széles sósivatag, ahol hevesebb esőzések után flamingók és más madarak ezrei gyűlnek össze.



A hatóságok víztartályos teherautókat küldtek a térségbe, és az oltásban helikopterek is segédkeznek.



A namíbiai környezetvédelmi minisztérium közölte: azt gyanítják, hogy a lángok a parkkal határos egyik ipari területen keletkeztek. A tárca közlése szerint jelentős ökológiai károkat okozott a tűz.

Az aszály sújtotta Namíbia arra készül, hogy 723 vadállatot, köztük 83 elefántot öl le a lakosság élelmiszerhiányának enyhítése érdekében – jelentette be a délnyugat-afrikai ország környezetvédelmi minisztériuma.






A minisztérium hétfői tájékoztatója szerint olyan területeken ritkítják meg a vadállományt, ahol az állatoknak is kevés az élelem, a legelő és a víz.



Afrika déli része évek óta nem tapasztalt, súlyos aszállyal küzd, Zimbabwéban, Zambiában és Malawiban már élelmezési válsághelyzetet kellett kihirdetni, Lesotho és Namíbia pedig humanitárius segítséget kért. Az ENSZ szerint



Namíbia júliusban felélte élelmiszer-tartalékának 84 százalékát.



Az ország lakossága csaknem felének az élelmezése veszélybe kerülhet a következő hónapokban.



A környezetvédelmi tárca szerint amennyiben a hatóságok nem lépnek közbe, a súlyos szárazság miatt egyre inkább ki fog éleződni az élethalálharc az emberek és a vadállatok között.



A 83 elefánt mellett, 30 víziló, 60 bölény, 50 impala, 100 csíkos gnú, 300 zebra és 100 jávorantilop került föl a kilövendő állatok listájára.



Hétfőig 157 állatot már levadásztak, amivel 56 800 kilogramm húst nyertek a lakosság számára.



A minisztérium hangsúlyozta, hogy az intézkedésre szükség van, és az összehangban van az alkotmánnyal, ugyanis az ország természeti erőforrásait a lakosság javára kell fordítani.



Becslések szerint több mint 200 ezer elefánt él öt dél-afrikai állam – Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Angola és Namíbia – területén. Tavaly viszont az aszály miatt elefántok százai pusztultak el Botswanában és Zimbabwéban.
