Hongkongban százak vonultak utcára vasárnap, hogy tiltakozzanak a pekingi kormányzat által tervezett nemzetbiztonsági törvény ellen – tudósított internetes oldalán a South China Morning Post (SCMP) című hongkongi lap.
A különleges közigazgatási státusszal bíró város vásárlónegyedében tartott demonstráció feloszlatására a rendőrség több alkalommal vetett be könnygázt.
Tam Tak-chi demokratapárti politikust a rendőrök pár perccel a helyszínen tartott beszéde megkezdése után őrizetbe vették, amiért engedély nélküli gyülekezést vezet. Tam azzal védekezett, hogy „egészségügyi tájékoztatást” tart, amit nem tiltanak a városban jelenleg érvényben lévő, a nyolcfősnél nagyobb gyülekezést tiltó járványelleni óvintézkedések. A helyszínen lévő ápolók jelenlétét hozta fel bizonyítékul, hogy a beszéde nem ütközik a szabályokba.
A hongkongi rendőrség a tiltakozó akció kezdete előtt Facebook-oldalán tett közzé felhívást, amelyben arra szólította fel a hongkongiakat, hogy ne vegyenek részt engedély nélküli gyülekezésben. Közölték: elegendő számú rendőrt helyeztek készenlétbe ahhoz, hogy megtehessék a szükséges lépéseket, és őrizetbe vegyék a szabálysértőket.
A demonstrációt két nappal azt követően tartották a városban, hogy a kínai parlament Pekingben zajló ülésszakán bemutatták a Hongkongra vonatkozó nemzetbiztonsági törvénytervezetet, amely betiltaná a lázadást, az elszakadási törekvések hangoztatását, és a központi kormányzat ellen irányuló, „felforgatónak” minősített cselekményeket. A hongkongi kormányzat számára pedig előírná, hogy új intézményeket hozzon létre a szuverenitás védelme céljából, valamint engedélyezze a pekingi ügynökségeknek, hogy belátásuk szerint járjanak el a városban.
A törvénytervezetet várhatóan május 28-án fogadja el a kínai parlament, megkerülve a hongkongi törvényhozást.
A hongkongi kormányzat 2003-ban arra kényszerült, hogy félretegyen egy nemzetbiztonsági törvénytervezetet, miután becslések szerint mintegy félmillióan vonultak utcára a városban, hogy tiltakozzanak ellene. Hongkongi ellenzéki politikusok szerint a pénteken ismertetett törvénytervezet egyoldalú bevezetésének terve azt jelentené, hogy Peking a Hongkong nagyfokú autonómiáját garantáló „egy ország, két rendszer” elve helyett az „egy ország, egy rendszer” elvét alkalmazza.
