Az egyik haláleset a hónap elején, a másik pedig augusztus 30-án történt, mindkettő Kozhikode kerületben, közölték tisztviselők.
Az áldozat két hozzátartozójának is pozitív lett a vírustesztje, és kórházban vannak. 2018 óta ez a negyedik Nipah-járvány Keralában.
Az Egészségügyi Világszervezet szerint a Nipah-vírus fertőzés egy zoonózisos betegség, amely állatokról, például sertésekről és denevérekről terjed az emberre. A vírus fertőzött élelmiszerrel és a fertőzött személlyel való érintkezés során is továbbítható.
A vírussal fertőzötteknél néha nem mutatkoznak észrevehető tüneteket, míg mások akut légzőszervi problémák jeleit mutatják. Súlyos esetekben a Nipah-fertőzés encephalitishez, az agyat érintő súlyos betegséghez vezethet.
A vírussal fertőzöttek halálozási aránya magas, mivel nincs gyógyszer vagy vakcina a fertőzés kezelésére, ami a tünetek enyhítésére és általános kezelésre korlátozódik.
