Bangladesben a hatóságok több tízezer ember evakuálását kezdték meg a part menti térségekből a várhatóan az éjszaka folyamán lecsapó Remal ciklon miatt.
Mohammad Omár Faruk, a bangladesi meteorológiai intézet vezetője azt mondta, a ciklon miatt máris több körzetből jelentettek heves esőzéseket. Hozzátette, hogy a Remal várhatóan délután és éjfél között érkezik Banglades fölé.
A hatóságok azt közölték: fel vannak készülve arra, hogy akár kétmillió embert is kitelepítsenek az érintett térségekből. Az evakuálásokat a bangladesi Vörös Félhold, a haditengerészet és a rendőrség is segíti – tették hozzá.
A szomszédos India Bangladeshez közeli részén szintén készülnek a ciklonra: Kolkata repülőtere bejelentette, hogy vasárnap éjféltől csaknem egy napra felfüggeszti az induló és az érkező járatokat.
A Bengáli-öböl partvidékén fekvő és több folyótorkolatot is magában foglaló, 160 millió lakosú Bangladesben nem ritkák az árvizek és ciklonok.
Klímakutatók arra hívták fel a figyelmet, hogy amíg az óceánok vize meleg és kedvezőek a szelek, a ciklonok hosszabb ideig őrzik meg intenzitásukat.
