 A kiadvány tudósítása szerint a reggeli órákban a járművek ellopásával gyanúsított férfi elfogásakor RGD-5 típusú kézigránátot vett elő és a felrobbantásával fenyegetőzve túszul ejtett egy rendőrt. A helyszínre érkezett rendőri vezetőkkel folytatott tárgyalás során beleegyezett abban, hogy a közrendőrt kicserél Vitalij Sijan ezredesre, a megyei rendőrség bűnügyi nyomozóosztályának vezetőjére. A túszcsere után a férfi az ezredessel együtt beült egy szolgálati rendőrautóba és Kijev irányában kihajtott a városból rendőrautók kíséretében.
 
 Oleg Szinyehubov, a Poltava megyei kormányzó Telegram-csatornáján azt közölte, a kézigránát felrobbantásával fenyegetőző túszejtő bűnözőnek azért tették lehetővé a megyeszékhely elhagyását, hogy ne jelentsen veszélyt a város lakosaira. Megerősítette, hogy a férfi túszával együtt Kijev irányában halad rendőrautók kíséretében. A megyevezető szerint most a legfontosabb az emberéletek megóvása.
