Kennedy szenátort, az 1968-as elnökválasztási kampány egyik demokrata jelöltaspiránsát meggyilkoló Sirhan Sirhan feltételes szabadlábra helyezéséről döntenek.
George Gascon Los Angeles-i kerületi ügyész, aki saját bevallása szerint dicsőítette a Kennedy családot, és másoknál is jobban megrendülve gyászolta Robert F. Kennedy szenátort, a meghallgatás előtt kijelentette: kiáll azon meggyőződése mellett, hogy a vádhatóság nem játszhat szerepet annak eldöntésében, hogy egyes rabokat elengednek-e vagy sem. Mint azt korábban az AP amerikai hírügynökségnek nyilatkozva elmondta, a döntést jobb meghagyni a kaliforniai kegyelmi bizottságnak, amely felméri, hogy Sirhan biztonságosan szabadlábra helyezhető-e.
Az amerikai hatóságok eddig 15 alkalommal utasították el az 53 éve rácsok mögé került, palesztin származású Sirhan Sirhan szabadlábra helyezését. A most 77 esztendős Sirhant egy San Diego melletti büntetés-végrehajtási intézetben tartják fogva. A gyilkosságot követő évben, 1969-ben halálra ítélték, de büntetését 1972-ben életfogytiglani szabadságvesztésre változtatták, miután Kaliforniában megszüntették a halálbüntetést.
A palesztin születésű Sirhan családjával 1956-ban települt át az Egyesült Államokba. Egykori vallomása szerint Kennedynek az 1967-es, hatnapos arab-izraeli háború során tett kijelentései miatt határozta el magát merényletre, amelyet a Los Angeles-i Ambassador Hotelben követett el 1968. június 5-én. Sirhan akkor 24 éves volt. A legutóbbi, 2016-os meghallgatásán azonban immár sokadszorra azt vallotta, hogy nem emlékszik a gyilkosságra, s csak az azt megelőző történéseket tudja felidézni. A kegyelmi testületnek akkor azt mondta, ha szabadlábra kerül, abban reménykedik, kitoloncolják Jordániába, vagy esetleg engedélyezik számára, hogy testvérével élhessen a kaliforniai Pasadenában.
