A demonstrálók az intézmény új rektorának kinevezése ellen tiltakoztak, mert úgy vélik, hogy az illető szoros kapcsolatban áll Recep Tayyip Erdogan török elnök pártjával.
A tanulók rajzát csúnya támadásnak nevezte az isztambuli kormányzóság, a hatóság pedig mindannyiukat letartóztatta.
A BBC szerint a török belügyminisztérium közösségi csatornáin deviánsnak nevezte a diákokat. A bejegyzés komoly felháborodást váltott ki a lakosságból.
