A szörfözők közül a hatóságok két ember holttestét hétfőn este találták meg a tengerben, három további áldozatot pedig kedden húztak ki a vízből. Az ötödik áldozat után sokáig folyt a kutatás, de a De Telegraaf című holland napilap értesülése szerint végül őt is holtan találták meg a mentőcsapatok.
A kutatás mentőhajókkal és helikopterekkel folyt az eltűntek után. Az újság úgy tudja, hogy a csoport tapasztalt szörfösökből állt, semmi sem utalt a rájuk leselkedő veszélyre.
A szörfös csapatot, amely a Hága közelében fekvő Scheveningen partjainál szállt vízre, a heves szél és a felkorbácsolt hullámok ragadták el. Hét szörföst, akik nem tudtak maguktól partra jutni, sikerült kimenteni a tengerből.
