Legalább tizenheten meghaltak Kabulban, miután tálib fegyveresek lövöldözni kezdtek a hírre, hogy társaik elfoglalták az ellenállást tanúsító Pandzsír tartományt – közölték szombaton helyi médiaforrások.
A Samszád és a Tolo News hírügynökség szerint a pénteken kitört lövöldözésnek 41 sebesültje is van, jóllehet a tálibok eredetileg a levegőbe akartak lőni örömükben. Hasonló lövöldözést jelentettek Nangarhár tartományból is, ahol a tartományi főváros, Dzsalalábád egyik kórházának szóvivője, Gulzáda Szangar közölte: legalább tizennégyen megsebesültek. Zabihullah Mudzsáhid, a mozgalom egyik szóvivője bírálta társait a lövöldözés miatt. „Ne lőjetek a levegőbe, inkább adjatok hálát Allahnak!” – intette a fegyvereseket Twitteren, figyelmeztetve őket, hogy a lövedékek civileket találhatnak el.
A tálibok pénteken jelentették be, hogy elfoglaltál Pandzsírt, viszont az ottani ellenállók mtagadták a hírt. Ali Nazari, a pandzsíri Nemzeti Ellenállási Front (NRF) szóvivője szerint gyakorlatilag visszaverték az ország többi részében hatalmon lévő radikális iszlamistákat. „A tálibok propagandagépezete továbbra is azt szajkózza, hogy Pandzsír elesett, ami – mint az elmúlt héten megbizonyosodhattunk róla – hazugság, és ennek pont az ellenkezője igaz, hogy az NRF meghátrálásra kényszerítette őket” – mondta a szóvivő a BBC globális televíziós hírcsatornájának, a BBC World Newsnak nyilatkozva. Az Afganisztánban augusztus közepén ismét hatalomra kerülő tálibok Pandzsír kivételével az összes tartományt ellenőrzésük alá vonták. A Kabulhoz közel eső, észak-keleti tartomány politikai engedmények fejében történő átadásáról a tárgyalások gyorsan kudarcba fulladtak, és a tálibok úgy döntöttek, erővel szerzik meg Pandzsírt, amelyre az 1996-tól 2001-ig tartó uralmuk alatt nem tudták kiterjeszteni hatalmukat. A mostani ellenállást az afgán hadseregnek a régióba menekült alakulatai és a helyi erők alkotják. A hatalomból elűzött afgán kormány tagjai közül is sokan oda menekültek. A katonai ellenállás Ahmad Maszúd körül szerveződött, aki a 2001. szeptember 9-én meggyilkolt Ahmad Sah Maszúd, a tálibellenes küzdelem vezéralakjának a fia.
