Bizarr tengeri baleset történt Új-Zéland partjainál, egy kisebb halászhajó bálnának ütközött és felborult. A baleset következtében öten vesztették életüket– közölte a Stuff című helyi hírportál.
A baleset az ország Déli-szigetének keleti partján fekvő Kaikoura város partjainál történt. Craig Mackle, Kaikoura polgármestere az AP amerikai hírügynökségnek elmondta, hogy a baleset idején a víz teljesen nyugodt volt, és a feltételezések szerint egy bálna bukkant fel a hajó alól. Hozzátette, a térségben átutazóban volt néhány ámbráscet és púpos bálna.
A 8,5 méteres hajón összesen 11-en tartózkodtak, hat embert sikerült élve kimenteni a vízből. A mentésbe helikopterek és búvárok is bekapcsolódtak, a holttesteket megtalálták. Egy szemtanú, Vanessa Chapman arról számolt be, hogy ő és egy baráti társaság a Kaikoura melletti Goose Bayből figyelte a mentési munkálatokat.
Azt látta, hogy egy felborult csónak tetején ülő ember lengette a karját. Három helikopter körözött a levegőben, majd két búvár ugrott a vízbe, hogy segítsen. A csónak tetején lévő embert kimentették, egy másikat pedig, úgy látták, kihúztak a vízből.
Az érintett hajó a Fish Kaikoura nevű helyi halászati vállalkozáshoz tartozik. A cég tulajdonosai nem kívántak nyilatkozni az ügyben. A rendőrség jelenleg vizsgálja a történteket.
„Példátlan, tragikus esemény történt. A rendőrség megpróbál teljeskörű támogatást nyújtani az érintetteknek a nehéz időszakban” – mondta Matt Boyce, Kaikoura rendőrőrmestere.
A település egyebek között azzal vonzza a turistákat, hogy a körzetben bálnákat és delfineket lehet megfigyelni. Több hajótársaság kínál olyan hajókázást, amelynek fő célja a tengeri állatok megközelítése, tanulmányozásuk megkönnyítése.
