Úgy tudni, hogy a robbanás a cseljabinszki traktorüzemben történt. A gyárat működtető vállalattal szemben korábban Ukrajna és az Egyesült Államok is szankciókat vezetett be.
Szemtanúk szerint először egy robbanást hallottak, majd tűz ütött ki, és sűrű füst szállt fel a gyárból. A Mash nevű Telegram-csatorna szerint egy transzformátor robbanhatott fel, és emiatt az sincs kizárva, hogy áramkimaradások lesznek a városban.
