Két United Airlines repülőgép ütközött össze a New York-i LaGuardia repülőtéren, miközben már így is súlyos késésekkel küzdöttek az időjárás és a történelmi kormányzati leállás miatt. Bár sérülés nem történt, az eset újabb figyelmeztetés a légiközlekedésben tapasztalható feszültségekre.
A New York Post jelentése szerint az incidens még pénteken történt, amikor egy Orlandóból érkező United Airlines járat a beszállókapuhoz kanyarodva megsúrolta egy másik, Houstonba tartó United-gép hátsó részét, ami ekkor álló helyzetben várakozott a gurulóúton.
Egy utas így emlékezett vissza a pillanatra: „Mindannyian éreztünk egy lökést a kifutópályára gurulás közben, de nem tudtuk, hogy egy másik gép volt az, amíg a kapitány nem mondta”. A két repülőgép azonnal visszatért a kapuhoz, és a fedélzeten tartózkodó 328 utast és 15 fős személyzetet biztonságosan kiszállították.
A karbantartó csapatok jelenleg vizsgálják a megsérült gépet, hogy kiderüljön, keletkezett-e bármilyen műszaki hiba az ütközés következtében. A Houstonba tartó járat már az ütközés előtt is 90 perces késésben volt, amely az éjszaka folyamán tovább nőtt.
A LaGuardia repülőtér forgalmát aznap már amúgy is súlyosan akadályozták a heves és erős széllökések, amik miatt több órára leállították a gépek felszállását. Az átlagos földi késés 2 óra 15 perc volt, de egyes járatok akár öt órát is késtek. Az Országos Meteorológiai Szolgálat éjfélig szélriasztást adott ki.
A kikötői hatóság minden kérdést a United Airlineshoz irányított, míg a LaGuardia repülőtér nem reagált a megkeresésekre. Az FAA (Szövetségi Légügyi Hivatal) a kormányzati leállás miatt nem tudott nyilatkozni.
Az amerikai repülőterek országszerte hasonló problémákkal küzdenek, mivel a légiforgalmi irányítók körében súlyos létszámhiány alakult ki. Sean Duffy közlekedési miniszter figyelmeztetett: „Katasztrófa lesz, ha a leállás novemberbe és az ünnepi időszakba is átnyúlik.” Hozzátette, a fizetés nélkül maradt irányítók kénytelenek lehetnek másodállást vállalni, hogy fedezni tudják kiadásaikat, és „tömeges problémák lesznek az egész légteret illetően”.

A hatóságok egyelőre nem közölték az áldozatok kilétét, és vizsgálják a repülőgép-szerencsétlenség okait.
A helyszínre több település tűzoltói és mentőcsapatai vonultak ki. A megyei seriffhivatal szóvivője közölte, hogy az eset vizsgálatát a Szövetségi Légügyi Hivatal (FAA) veszi át.
A közlekedőket arra kérték, kerüljék el a környéket, amíg a hatóságok biztosítják a területet. A helyszíni képeken jól látszik, hogy a mentő- és rendőrautók teljesen lezárták az autópályát.
A lezuhant gépet Beechcraft King Air C90 típusú repülőgép-ként azonosították. Egyelőre nem világos, hányan tartózkodtak a fedélzeten. Egy szemtanú, Lauren Anderson, egy helyi állateledelbolt dolgozója elmondta, hogy egy „óriási fekete füstfelhőt” látott, ami legalább 30 méter szélesnek tűnt.
