Як повідомляє агентство Reuters, у січні 2023 року офіційні представники спецслужб США говорили про невизначеність щодо того, хто ж почав керувати «Аль-Каїдою». Однак, як зазначається у доповіді ООН про ризики тероризму в світі, ще у листопаді та грудні минулого року багато держав ООН визнавали Аделя фактичним керівником операцій «Аль-Каїди» та її беззаперечним лідером.
У листопаді 1998 року у США велике федеральне журі звинуватило Аделя у терористичному нападі на посольства США у Танзанії та Кенії. Жертвами терактів стали понад 220 цивільних людей, понад 5 тисяч – були поранені.
За словами американських слідчих, на рахунку Аделя, крім операцій в Африці, причетність до вбивства американського журналіста Деніела Перла у Пакистані у 2002 році.
Державний департамент США повідомляє, що Адель базується в Ірані. На сайті програми Держдепартаменту «Нагорода за правосуддя» йдеться про те, що після вибухів в Африці колишній підполковник єгипетської армії переїхав на південний схід Ірану і там жив під охороною захисту Корпусу вартових ісламської революції.
Іранське представництво при ООН у повідомленні, опублікованому 15 лютого в твіттері, заперечило, що Адель перебуває в Ірані. «Адреса так званого новопризначеного лідера «Аль-Каїди» – неправильна. Ця дезінформація потенційно може перешкодити зусиллям по боротьбі з тероризмом», – йдеться у повідомленні, яке цитує Reuters.
Президент США Джо Байден під час свого звернення до співвітчизників повідомив про контртерористичну операцію в Афганістані, в результаті якої було вбито ватажка „Аль-Каїди” Аймана аз-Завахірі.
„Він залишив за собою слід убивств та насильства щодо американських громадян, американських військовослужбовців, американських дипломатів та американських інтересів”, – заявив Байден.
„Тепер правосуддя відбулося і цього лідера терористів більше немає”, – підтвердив президент США.
Американський лідер додав, що ніхто із членів родини аз-Завахірі не постраждав, а також не було жертв серед цивільного населення.
Він також зазначив, що США не допустять повторного перетворення Афганістану на притулок для терористів.
Терористи з „Аль-Каїди”, ймовірно, здатні за один або два роки настільки посилитися в Афганістані, що зможуть звідти знову становити загрозу для території США, заявив у вівторок глава розвідувального управління міністерства оборони США Скотт Берр’є.
За повідомленням Associated Press, таку оцінку він дав під час виступу на конференції з питань національної безпеки і розвідки.
Зі свого боку заступник голови ЦРУ Девід Коен заявив, що США вже отримують „деякі дані, що вказують на можливу активізацію „Аль-Каїди” в Афганістані”.
Після терактів 11 вересня 2001 року в США боротьба проти „Аль-Каїди” була одним із заявлених завдань Вашингтона і його союзників, які протягом 20 років проводили військову операцію в Афганістані. Ця операція завершилася в серпні 2021 року.
Тепер, як зазначає Associated Press, багато експертів побоюються, що рух „Талібан”, який захопив владу в Афганістані, або не зможе, або не захоче стримувати поширення „Аль-Каїди” на афганській території.
