У Нігерії в результаті самопідриву загинув ватажок ісламістського угруповання «Боко Харам» Абубакар Шекау.
Про це йдеться у аудіозаписі розмов бойовиків Західноафриканської провінції «Ісламської держави» (ISWAP), повідомляє BBC.
Зазначається, що на записі особа, яка називала себе ватажком ISWAP Абу Мусаб аль-Барнавом, стверджувала, що Шекау помер, коли його переслідували бойовики ISWAP після бою. Шекау пропонували приєднатися до них, проте він відмовився, наклав на себе руки, підірвавши себе.
Водночас ані «Боко Харам», ані уряд Нігерії не підтвердили смерть Шекау.
Як відомо, «Боко Харам» — радикальне ісламістське угруповання, що здійснює свою діяльність на північному сході Нігерії, півночі Камеруну та Нігеру. Організація заснована в 2002 році Мохамедом Юсуфом і ставила за мету побудову ісламської держави із законами шаріату.
Організація відома чисельними нападами на церкви, школи, поліцейські дільниці, а також викраденням та вбивством цивільного населення. Всього членами організації в період між 2002 та 2013 роком було вбито понад 10 000 чоловік. 22 травня 2014 року визнана Радою Безпеки ООН, як терористична організація.
У квітні 2015 року «Боко Харам» була перейменована на Західноафриканську провінцію «Ісламської держави».
