У кількох штатах США афроамериканцям, зокрема школярам, були розіслані расистські повідомлення із закликом «готуватися збирати бавовну на найближчих плантаціях». За даними Forbes, федеральна влада вже розслідує цю справу.
Федеральне бюро розслідувань США (ФБР) поінформувало, що йому відомо про образливі й расистські повідомлення, і зв’язалося з міністерством юстиції країни та іншими федеральними органами.
За даними CNN, правоохоронці отримали заяви про повідомлення мовою ворожнечі з понад 20 штатів, зокрема з Нью-Йорка, Каліфорнії, Огайо, Пенсильванії, Північної Кароліни, Луїзіани, Теннессі. Стиль текстів однаковий, але формулювання різні. Водночас послання були схожі тим, що в них говориться про рабство. Спільною є також вказівка на місце та час збору бавовни.
NBC News опублікувало кілька образливих повідомлень.
Наприклад, в одному з них відправник написав: «За вами приїдуть на коричневому фургоні. Будьте готові до обшуку, щойно прибудете на плантацію».
В іншому текстовому повідомленні те, що одержувач повинен збирати бавовну, пов’язується з перемогою Дональда Трампа на президентських виборах.
Маргарет Гуанг, голова громадської правозахисної організації Southern Poverty Law Center, висловила осуд з приводу згаданих інцидентів і наголосила у своїй заяві, що «лідери країни повинні засудити расизм на всіх рівнях».
Деррік Джонсон, голова організації із захисту громадянських прав NAACP, в інтерв’ю AP зазначив, що згадка про рабство у 2024 році викликає глибоке занепокоєння. За його словами, повідомлення мають на меті перешкодити афроамериканцям користуватися такими ж свободами, як інші громадяни в Сполучених Штатах.
Як повідомляє Forbes, генеральні прокурори Північної Кароліни та Луїзіани також засудили повідомлення й закликали людей інформувати про такі тексти.

Шериф міста Т. К. Вотерс розповів журналістам, що чоловік був озброєний пістолетом Glock і гвинтівкою AR-15, також він був вдягнений в тактичний жилет і маску. Він увійшов до магазину мережі Dollar General і застрелив двох темношкірих чоловіків і жінку, після чого застрелився сам.
Слідство зазначає, що злочин було скоєно на расовій основі, адже перед злочином він розіслав кілька маніфестів до ЗМІ, де виражав свою ненависть до темношкірих. Крім цього, його зброя була розмальована свастиками.
