Поліція встановила особу чоловіка, підозрюваного в нападі Рушді 12 серпня – це 24-річний Хаді Матар із Нью-Джерсі. Його заарештували поліцейські на місці події в Шатокуа, штат Нью-Йорк.

Хомейні використав фетву, щоб закликати мусульман вбити Рушді, але в 1998 році МЗС Ірану запевнив Великобританію, що фетва не буде виконана.
