У кількох європейських країнах та США були заарештовані 10 членів хакерської групи, які вчиняли шахрайські махінації за допомогою SIM-карт. Зловмисники викрали криптовалюти на суму понад 100 мільйонів доларів шляхом фішингу, зокрема в різних знаменитостей, повідомило в середу Європейське поліцейське агентство (Європол).
Європол заявив про арешт 10 хакерів, котрі підозрюються в крадіжці криптовалюти на 100 млн доларів у ході атак із заміною SIM-карт, що дозволило їм отримати доступ до телефонів своїх жертв. За даними Європолу, арешти були здійснені після розслідування, яке тривало майже рік і проводилося спільно з правоохоронними органами Великобританії, США, Бельгії, Канади та Мальти.
Протягом 2020 року атаки, організовані цією злочинною групою, торкнулися тисячі людей, у тому числі відомих інтернет-блогерів, зірок спорту, музикантів та їхніх сімей.
Розслідування виявило методи роботи злочинної мережі: під час атаки із заміною SIM-карти злочинці отримували контроль над нею, тобто над маленьким комп’ютерним чипом, на якому зберігається номер телефону, що використовується для ідентифікації клієнта в телекомунікаційній мережі. Зазвичай телефонну компанію обманюють, змушуючи деактивувати працюючу SIM-карту й передати її функції тій, яка контролюється хакерами. Згадані махінації дозволили зловмисникам викрасти гроші, криптовалюти та особисту інформацію, зокрема контакти, синхронізовані з онлайн-акаунтами. Крім того, як правило, хакери зламували також облікові записи в соціальних мережах, щоб публікувати контент і відправляти повідомлення, маскуючись під жертву.
Європол зазначив, що кібератака, спрямована на SIM-карти, є однією з останніх тенденцій цифрового шахрайства. Зазвичай кіберзлочинці обходять постачальників телефонних послуг або за допомогою корумпованих інсайдерів, по суті, деактивують SIM-карти жертв і переносять їхні номери на телефонну картку членів своєї мережі.
