У Флориді підтвердився випадок зараження амебою, яка руйнує мозок. Попередження про це місцевий департамент охорони здоров’я поширив у районі одного із західних берегів штату.
Департамент охорони здоров’я Флориди не зазначив, хто захворів, чоловік чи жінка, а також не надав більш детальну інформацію про цей випадок. Однак із поширеного попередження випливає, що інцидент стався в районі м. Тампа на західному узбережжі. Населення та туристів закликали уникати прісноводних водойм і пляжів, вживати воду з крана лише кип’яченою та не допускати потрапляння води в ніс.
Такі амеби зазвичай зустрічаються в озерах, ставках та річках і є активними при температурі води 25–30°C. Під час контакту людини із зараженою водою паразит може проникнути через ніс у головний мозок.
Ці одноклітинні не поширюються від людини до людини. Особи, заражені мікроскопічною амебою, яка руйнує мозок (Naegleria fowleri), відчувають задуху, мають високу температуру, головний біль, спазми шиї. У хворих виникає блювання, у подальшому галюцинації. Людина помирає протягом тижня після зараження.
Зараження одноклітинною мікроскопічною амебою невиліковне. Проте в базі даних центрів контролю та профілактики захворювань (CDC) США є відомості про трьох осіб, які вижили: один випадок був зареєстрований у 1982 році в Каліфорнії, другий – у 2005-му в Мексиці, а третій – у 2013-му в Арканзасі.
Департамент охорони здоров’я Флориди закликає всіх, хто має схожі симптоми, негайно звернутися до лікаря.
«Це дуже рідкісна хвороба, тож за умови ефективної профілактики літній сезон може бути безпечним», – ідеться в повідомленні відомства.
Зараження бактеріями та амебами зазвичай відбувається на півдні Сполучених Штатів, хоча у 2019 році декілька випадків сталося на східному узбережжі штату Меріленд.
У період з 2009 по 2018 рік унаслідок зараження амебою Naegleria fowleri померли 34 людини. 30 із них заразилися під час заняття водними видами спорту, троє промивали ніс водопровідною водою, ще одна особа заразилася на водяній гірці, встановленій у саду, для якої використовували водопровідну воду, що виявилася зараженою.
