Figyelmes szemlélődők gyors közbeavatkozásával mentették meg az amerikai történelem egy fontos részét. Észrevették ugyanis, hogy egy tetőtől talpig fekete ruhába öltözött nő benzint locsolt Martin Luther King atlantai szülőházára, de már nem tudta felgyújtani – tudósított a BBC.
Először a turisták azt hitték, hogy a nő a virágokat locsolja meg, csak később esett le nekik, hogy a ház falát. Arra viszont már nem volt ideje, hogy az öngyújtójáért elmenjen, és lángba borítsa az épületet.
King 12 éves koráig élt itt, a házat 2018-ban vásárolta meg a helyi nemzeti park, és november vége óta a felújítások miatt a ház nem látogatható. A rendőrök helyi idő szerint csütörtökön 17:45-kor kaptak riasztást, és gyorsan a helyszínre érkeztek.

Egészségügyi intézményben lövöldözött Georgia állam fővárosában, Atlantában egy férfi; egy ember meghalt, négyen megsérültek. A rendőrség elfogta a gyilkossággal gyanúsított személyt.
A lövöldöző meneküléséhez használt járművet a hatóságok később megtalálták, de a férfit a helyi idő szerint estig nem került elő.

A lövöldözésben megsérült három kamaszt – egy 15 és egy 11 éves fiút, valamint egy 15 éves lányt – kórházba szállították, állapotukról egyelőre további információt a hatóságok nem szolgáltattak.

Az egyesült államokbeli Georgia kormányzója helyi idő szerint hétfőn este rendkívüli állapotot hirdetett és behívta a nemzeti gárdát az Atlantában elharapódzott erőszak miatt – írja az MTI.
A republikánus Brian Kemp azután hirdetett rendkívüli állapotot, hogy a Függetlenség Napi hétvégén a városban kitört lövöldözéseknek 31 sebesült és 5 halálos áldozatuk volt, közöttük egy 8 éves kislány is.
A fekete kislány, Secoriea Turner az édesanyjával és egy másik felnőttel együtt ült egy autóban, és amikor a vezető megpróbált elhajtani egy illegálisan emelt barikád mellett, hogy leparkoljon, a parkoló bejáratánál lévő fegyveres csoport lőni kezdett rájuk, és agyonlőtte a kislányt.
Kemp a hétvégi események után elrendelte a Nemzeti Gárda mozgósítását. Mintegy ezer gárdistát hívtak be, feladatuk elsősorban a szövetségi és a helyi kormányzati épületek védelme. Kedd reggeltől a Nemzeti Gárda védi a helyi törvényhozás épületét, a kormányzói palotát és a rendőrség központját. Ezen kívül a kormányzó utasítást adott a szabadságon lévő rendőrök mozgósítására is, és így megnövelték a járőrök létszámát. Az országutakat, utcákat, lakóközösségeket fokozatosan ellenőrzik, minden nagyvárosban, de elsősorban Atlantában.
„A békés tüntetéseket veszélyes, kártékony bűnözők kerítették hatalmukba. Ártatlan georgiaiakat vesznek célba, lőnek agyon, hagynak meghalni az utcán” – áll a kormányzó közleményében. „Ennek a törvénytelen állapotnak véget kell vetni, és helyre kell állítani a rendet államunk fővárosában”. Hozzáfűzte azt is, hogy „elég volt a beszédből, meg kell védenünk valamennyi georgiai életét és megélhetését”, írta.
A hétvégén két másik amerikai nagyvárosban is elszabadult a fegyveres erőszak. New Yorkban 44 embert lőttek meg, Chicagóban pedig 17 halálos áldozatot és több mint 70 sebesültet hagytak maguk után a lövöldözések.
