Legkevesebb harminc zöld tengeri teknőst találtak elpusztulva egy távoli japán sziget partján, miután sokukat nyakon szúrt egy halász – számolt be az Index a BBC-re hivatkozva.
A Kumejima-szigeten élő helyiek múlt csütörtökön fedezték fel a tetemeket, miután az apály azokat a szárazföldre hozta.
Egy halász elismerte, hogy megsebesítette a tengeri teknősöket, hogy kiszedje őket a halászhálókból – írja a BBC. A rendőrség vizsgálja az állatkínzás vádját.
„Néhány teknőst kibogoztam és visszaengedtem a tengerbe, de a súlyosabb teknősöket nem tudtam kiszabadítani, ezért megkéseltem őket, hogy megszabaduljak tőlük” – mondta egy meg nem nevezett halász.
A helyi média arról számolt be, hogy a rendőrség múlt héten rendőröket vezényelt a helyszínre, de nem világos, hogy történt-e bármilyen intézkedés.
A zöld tengeri teknősöket a japán hatóságok és a globális természetvédelmi csoportok veszélyeztetett fajként tartják nyilván.
Köztudott, hogy gyakran megfordulnak a Kumejima – a japán szárazföldtől mintegy 2000 kilométerre délre fekvő apró szigetek egyikének – moszat- és hínárrétegében, ahol szintén aktív védelmi erőfeszítések folynak.
A sziget tengeri teknősmúzeumának tengerbiológusai és más munkatársai a teknősök felfedezése után a partra siettek, de a legtöbb állat addigra már mozdulatlanná vált.
Többeknek szúrt sebek voltak a nyakuk tövénél, míg másoknak az uszonyaikon is vágások voltak. A múzeum által közzétett képeken az állatok a sekély vízben úsznak.

Mexikó csendes-óceáni partvidékén mintegy 300 tengeri teknős tetemét mosta partra a víz.
Az előzetes vizsgálatok szerint az olajzöld fattyúteknősök (Lepidochelys olivacea) megfulladtak – közölte a mexikói környeetvédelmi minisztérium illetékese.
Illegális halászok hálójába gabalyodhattak vagy olyan halászhálókba, amelyektől halászok szabadultak meg a nyílt vizeken – tette hozzá.
A 35-45 kilogramm súlyú olajzöld fattyúteknősöket a Természetvédelmi Világszervezet (IUCN) vörös listáján a sebezhető fajok között tartják számon. Az IUCN szerint populációjuk csökken, és azért sorolták a sebezhető fajok közé, mert nagyon kevés olyan hely van, ahol fészket raknak.
Az elpusztult hüllőket a Mexikó nyugati részén fekvő Morro Ayuta strandon találták, ez azon kevés helyek egyike, ahol az olajzöld fattyúteknősök fészket raknak. Valamennyi állat nőstény volt – közölte Ernesto Albavera Padilla teknősökkel foglalkozó szakember a helyi sajtóval.
Nem ez az első alkalom, hogy ilyen nagy számban találnak a térségben elpusztult olajzöld fattyúteknősöket. 2018-ban halászok bukkantak mintegy 300 egyedre halászhálókba gabalyodva.
Mexikóban 1990-ban betiltották a tengeri teknösök halászatát, és szigorú büntetéssel sújtják azt, aki megöl egy ilyen állatot.
