Odessza történelmi központja januárban került fel az UNESCO veszélyeztetett világörökségi helyszíneket felsoroló listájára, Oroszország Ukrajna ellen indított háborúja miatt.

A romvárost 1922-ben fedezték fel, és napjainkig rejtély övezi a várost benépesítő civilizáció eltűnését, amely egy időben történt az ókori Egyiptom és Mezopotámia kultúrájának végével.

A romváros jelképének számító buddhista sztúpa – imádkozó, meditációs és temetkezési épület – sértetlen maradt – mondta el Abbászi –, de az esőzés számos külső, illetve válaszfalat megrongált. Az egész Pakisztánt sújtó áradás közepette Szindh tartományban a legsúlyosabb a helyzet.
Sabház Sarif pakisztáni kormányfő a televízióban mondott beszédében arra hívta fel az ország lakóit, hogy nyújtsanak segítséget az árvízkárosultaknak.
Sarif a nemzetközi közösséget is kérte, hogy küldjenek további segítséget az árvíz áldozatainak. Hangoztatta, hogy Pakisztán az éghajlatváltozás kiváltotta katasztrófával áll szemben.
Szakértők szerint 1959 óta Pakisztán a világ széndioxid-kibocsátásának mindössze 0,4 százalékáért volt felelős, szemben az Egyesült Államok 21,5 és Kína 16,4 százalékával.
António Guterres ENSZ-főtitkár a múlt héten sürgette, hogy a világ hagyjon fel „a válságban való alvajárással”. A főtitkár a tervek szerint szeptember 9-én látogat a katasztrófa sújtotta térségbe. Pakisztáni vezetők szerint Guterres elutazik Szindh tartományba, de azt még nem tudni, hogy ellátogat-e Mohendzsáróba.
