Пізно ввечері в середу ураган „Зета” обрушився на узбережжя США поблизу Нового Орлеана, посилившись до 2-ї категорії потужності.
Згідно з даними Національного центру ураганів США (NHC), швидкість вітру сягає 175 км/год, що дорівнює потужності урагану між другою і третьою категорією. Окрім Луїзіани, у Міссісіпі та Алабамі також було оголошено надзвичайний стан.
Губернатори всіх трьох штатів попередили населення, що ураган може ще більше посилитися і стати одним із найбільш руйнівних стихійних лих за десятиліття. В деяких регіонах оголосили штормове попередження.
Губернатор штату Луїзіана Джон Бел Едвардс дав розпорядження мобілізувати Національну гвардію та евакуювати прибережні райони ще у вівторок. Губернатори Міссісіпі та Алабами підтримали його рішення у середу. Президент США Дональд Трамп уже схвалив оголошення надзвичайного стану в штаті Луїзіана у вівторок ввечері, що у свою чергу означає, що штат може розраховувати на фінансову допомогу федерального уряду.
„Кожен повинен подбати про наявність вдома запасів їжі, води в пляшках та набору ліків”, – попередив місцевих жителів у середу вранці мер Нового Орлеана ЛаТоя Кантрелл, коли метеорологічна служба вже відносно точно вказала, що ураган ударить по місту або поблизу нього.
