Legkevesebb három ember halálát okozták tornádók és viharok az Egyesült Államok középső államaiban, a sérültek száma pedig több mint hetven – közölték szombaton hivatalosan.
A viharzóna péntekre virradóra csapott le Ohio, Kentucky, Arkansas és Indiana államok több részére. Ohio fővárosától, Columbustól északnyugatra, az Indian Lake tóvidékén, Logan megyében három ember halt meg a forgószél pusztításától. Volt olyan túlélő, aki arról számolt be, hogy a fürdőkádjába bújva tudta csak túlélni a természeti katasztrófát.
Az áldozatok és a túlélők után kutyás mentőegységek kutattak pénteken. Helyi kórházi illetékesek arról számoltak be, hogy Bellefontaine városban 25 embert kellett ellátniuk, többségüket töréses, illetve belső sérülésekkel.
Szemtanúk szerint a tornádót jelző szirénák megszólalását követő 10 perc múlva már meg is érkezett a forgószél, így felkészülni rá nagyon kevés idő maradt.
Az Indiana állambeli Winchester városban a jelentések szerint 38 ember sérült meg a forgószélben, hármuknak az állapota válságos. A polgármester közölte, hogy megsemmisült vagy súlyosan megrongálódott 130 lakóház és egy étterem. A viharok az állam más területén is okoztak súlyosabb károkat.
Kentucky Milton városában két ember attól sérült meg, hogy a tornádó által felkapott törmelék az autójukra zuhant. A településen mintegy száz épületben keletkeztek számottevő károk.
A viharról szóló összegzések szerint Illinois és Missouri államokban is kialakultak tornádók.

Több ember is súlyos fagyási sérüléseket szenvedett Kansas Cityben, a Chiefs és a Miami Dolphins mérkőzése alatt az amerikaifutball-bajnokság rájátszásában.
Egy Missouri állambeli kórházban állítólag egy tucat emberen végeztek amputációt, mind súlyos fagyási sérüléseket szenvedtek a január 13-i Dolphins és Kansas City Chiefs összecsapásán.
A rekordközeli hideg miatt a mentők 69 embert láttak el a meccs alatt, melyet sokáig meg sem akartak rendezni, miután aznap megdőlt a hidegrekord a városban. A mínusz 20 fokos hideg ellenére óriási volt a tömeg a lelátón, holott a széllökéseknek köszönhetően a hőérzet elérhette a mínusz 33 fokot is.
A sérültek pontos számát nem hozták nyilvánosságra, azonban a kórház közleménye szerint 12 páciensnél ujj- és lábujj-amputációt kellett végrehajtani, ráadásul további műtétekre lehet számítani.
A meccs azután került megrendezésre, hogy riasztást adott ki az amerikai meteorológiai szolgálat a hideg idő és az erős széllökések miatt. Feljegyzések alapján a Chiefs–Dolphins meccs volt az NFL történetének negyedik leghidegebb mérkőzése.

A rendőrség három embert őrizetbe vett egy buszmegállóban történ lövöldözés kapcsán az Egyesült Államokban. A támadók egy autóból kiugorva nyitottak tüzet a megállóban várakozó diákokra. A lövöldözésben nyolc tinédzser megsebesült. A hatóságok három gyanúsítottat őrizetbe vettek, egy embert még keresnek.
Három tizenévest őrizetbe vett a rendőrség a philadelphiai buszmegállóban történ lövöldözés kapcsán.
A hatóságok szerint a 18 éves Jamaal Tucker és Ahnile Buggs, valamint a 19 éves Jermahd Carter tagjai voltak annak a négyesnek, akik körülbelül harminc lövést adtak le középiskolai diákokra, akik egy buszmegállóban várakoztak.
Az álarcos fegyveresek egy autóból pattantak ki múlt hét szerdán, odasétáltak a megállóban várakozó csoporthoz, tüzet nyitottak rájuk, majd elmenekültek. A lövöldözésben nyolc 15 és 17 év közötti diák sebesült meg.
A támadás után a járókelők siettek a földön fekvő diákok segítségére. Egy 16 éves fiút kritikus állapotban szállítottak kórházba, az orvosok stabilizálták az állapotát.
Tucker múlt hét pénteken feladta magát a rendőröknek, két társát, Cartert és Buggsot a hétvégén vették őrizetbe. Buggs otthonában találtak egy fegyvert, ami egyezést mutatott a helyszínen talált töltényhüvelyekkel.
Az elkövetőket gyilkossági kísérlettel és súlyos testi sértéssel vádolják, de további vádemelések is folyamatban vannak.
A rendőrség a negyedik gyanúsítottat – akit már azonosított – még keresi.

Iskolabusz és kamion ütközött össze az Egyesült Államokban. A járművek az ütközés után kigyulladtak, a balesetben mindkét sofőr, valamint a buszon utazó három óvodás korú gyerek életét vesztette.
Óvodás korú gyerekeket szállító iskolabusz karambolozott egy homokszállító kamionnal Illinois államban Rushville közelében hétfőn.
A rendőrség közölte, hogy az ütközés következtében mindkét jármű kigyulladt. A balesetben a teherautó és az iskolabusz sofőrje, valamint három óvodás életét vesztette.
A Nemzeti Közlekedésbiztonsági Hivatal az állami rendőrséggel együttműködve vizsgálja a baleset körülményeit, egyelőre nem tudni, mi okozta a tragédiát.

Vasárnap délután a virginiai Bath megyében egy repülőgép-szerencsétlenségben öt ember meghalt – írja az ABC 13.
Jeff Ford, a Bath megyei repülőtéri hatóság elnöke elmondta, hogy vasárnap, helyi idő szerint délután háromkor egy kéthajtóműves repülőgép bejelentette, hogy kényszerleszállást kell végrehajtania.
A repülőgép nem érte el a leszállópályát és fák közé csapódott egy domboldalon – írja a Dailymail.
A hatóságok szerint a vészhelyzet oka egyelőre ismeretlen. A rendőrség megerősítette, hogy a balesetben öten haltak meg, egy gyerek és négy felnőtt – írja a Fox.

A becsapódás hatására a gép lángokba borult, ami nélkül lehetséges, hogy lehettek volna túlélői a balesetnek.
A CNN azt írja, egyelőre nem azonosították nyilvánosan az áldozatokat, így a kilétük ismeretlen. A szemtanúk arról számoltak be, hogy a gép láthatóan bajban volt, amikor az autópálya fölé értek, majd nem sokkal később földnek csapódtak. A hatóságok közlése szerint egy kelet felé tartó vonat összeütközött egy előtte álló szerelvénnyel. A balesetben több vagon is kisiklott. A szomszédos vágányra dőlt vagonoknak pedig egy éppen érkező, nyugat felé tartó vonat nekiütközött.
A két ütközés következtében több vagon leborult a töltésről, és a folyóba csúszott.
A balesetben senki sem sérült meg.
Thomas Barndt, a település rendőrfőnöke elmondta, hogy az egyik vagonból gázolaj ömlött a folyóba, amit egy szilikon gáttal megfékeztek, a kiömlött anyagot pedig eltávolítják a folyóból.
Egy másik vagonból műanyag pellet ömlött ki, ennek az eltakarítása zajlik.

Utakat, síközpontokat és turistalátványosságokat zártak le az idei tél legkomolyabb hóvihara miatt az Egyesült Államok Kalifornia és Nevada államában szombatra.
A két állam határán fekvő Sierra Nevada hegység egyes részein előrejelzések szerint 3 méter havat is hozhat a viharzóna, ami a magasabb csúcsokon óránkénti 200 kilométert meghaladó széllökésekkel érkezett pénteken.
Szombatra Nevada állam nyugati részén 130 kilométer körüli szélsebességet jeleznek előre. Az amerikai meteorológiai szolgálat szerint szombaton a nap első felében óránként mintegy 10-15 centi hó hullhat le. A kaliforniai autópálya-rendőrség lezárta az állam egyik fontos autóútjának hosszabb szakaszát a veszélyes útviszonyok miatt.
A Lake Tahoe környéki népszerű síközpontok közül 9 nem üzemel, több helyen lavinafigyelmeztetés van érvényben. Vasárnapig zárva tartják a Yosemite Nemzeti Parkot is.
A hatóságok arra kérték a lakosságot, hogy senki ne induljon útnak, de akinek halaszthatatlan dolga van Kalifornia keleti és Nevada nyugati részének hóvihar által érintett térségében, készüljön fel arra, hogy akár hosszabb időre is az autójában rekedhet.
