Az illetékes washingtoni bíróság tíz év börtönnel sújtotta a 2021. január 6-i washingtoni zavargásokban főszerepet játszó Proud Boys szervezet egy tagját pénteken, egy nappal azután, hogy két társára tizenöt és tizenhét év börtönt szabott ki.
A tíz évet kapott Dominic Pezzollát hatóság elleni erőszak, hatóságnak való ellenszegülés, kormányzati tulajdon megrongálása, hivatalos eljárás akadályozása és lopás vádjában találta bűnösnek az esküdtszék még májusban négy társával együtt.
A washingtoni bíró az ítélethozatalkor arra hívta fel a figyelmet, hogy Pezzolla volt az, aki egy ellopott rendőrségi pajzs segítségével áttörte az amerikai törvényhozás üveg bejáratát, utat nyitva az erőszakos tüntetők előtt, hogy bejussanak a Capitolium épületébe.
A kiszabott ítélet fele annyi, mint amit az ügyészség javasolt, a vád képviselője ugyanis húsz év börtönre ítéltette volna Pezzollát.
Csütörtökön Timothy Kelly bíró a Proud Boys radikális jobboldali szervezet két vezetőjét, Joseph Biggst és Zachary Rehlt 17 és 15 év börtönre ítélte, mindkettőjük esetében a rendkívül súlyos és ritkán alkalmazott államellenes szervezkedés volt a vád, súlyosbító tényezőként terrorizmust is beszámítva.
A két ítélet a második és harmadik legsúlyosabb büntetés, amelyet eddig a 2021. január 6-i eseményekkel összefüggésben a bíróság kiszabott, ugyanakkor az ügyészek ennél jóval súlyosabb, 33 év börtönt tartottak indokoltnak.
A védők korábban azzal érveltek, hogy a két férfi csak „félrevezetett hazafi”, de semmiképpen nem terrorista, a súlyos ítélet pedig csak növelné az országon belüli megosztottságot.
A bíróság várhatóan pénteken később még két vádlott esetében mondja ki a büntetést, míg a fővádlott, a Proud Boys alapítója és korábbi vezetője, Enrique Tarrio ügyében kedden hirdetik ki az ítéletet Washingtonban. Az ügyészség az ő esetében szintén 33 év kiszabását indítványozta.
A bírósági tárgyalás során a vádhatóság Tarriót nevezte a január 6-i zavargások egyik szervezőjének és irányítójának annak ellenére, hogy a zavargások napján nem tartózkodott az amerikai fővárosban, így személyesen nem vett részt az erőszakos cselekményekben.
A január 6-i eseményekkel összefüggésben az eddigi legsúlyosabb börtönbüntetést egy másik szélsőséges szervezet, az Oath Keepers korábbi vezetőjére, Stewart Rhodesra szabta ki a bíróság, akinek 18 évet kell börtönben töltenie.
A 2021. januári erőszakos tüntetéssel és zavargásokkal összefüggésben összesen mintegy 1100 ember ellen emeltek szövetségi bűncselekmények miatt vádat, és eddig 600 embert ítéltek el.

A Csendes-óceán felett a múlt héten még hurrikán kategóriájú viharzóna fokozatosan veszített erejéből, és trópusi, majd trópusi jellegű viharként érte el Mexikó felől Kalifornia államot vasárnap, ahol San Diego és Los Angeles környékén okozott károkat, háztartások százezreinél átmeneti áramszünetet.
A Los Angelestől keletre fekvő Cathedral Cityben több mint 10 embert kellett kimenekíteni egy idősotthonból sárlavina miatt, a közeli Palm Springst a lezúduló víz egy időre megközelíthetetlenné tette, az oda vezető utakat lezárták, miután a sár mellett nagyméretű sziklatömbök torlaszolták el.

Az ütközés olyan erejű volt, hogy a 20 éves Dominic Russo és a 19 éves Davion Flanagan is életét vesztette.
