Понад п’ять сотень шахтарів на золотому руднику поблизу Йоганнесбурга в Південній Африці уже кілька днів утримують під землею їхні колеги через профспілкову суперечку, повідомив директор шахти.
Директор компанії New Kleynfontein Gold Mine, яка управляє рудником, повідомив, що інцидент почався в понеділок уранці, коли шахтарі з незареєстрованої профспілки не дозволили сотням людей покинути шахту після закінчення нічної зміни.
За словами директора, під землею в різних частинах шахти перебувають 543 його співробітники. З ними зв’язалися в понеділок уранці. Один із заручників отримав серйозну травму голови під час бійки, але медиків та офіцера служби безпеки, які вирушили йому на допомогу, також узяли в заручники. Правоохоронці, яких направили в шахту, зв’язатися з бунтівниками не змогли.
Національна спілка шахтарів (NUM) повідомила, що, за даними офіційної профспілки шахти, понад п’ятсот їхніх членів «утримують під землею хулігани», а серед затриманих є й жінки.
Компанія, яка керує шахтою, звинувачує в цій ситуації членів конкуруючої профспілки AMCU, а також у спробі зробити свою профспілку офіційною на шахті. Але члени AMCU відкинули це звинувачення.

Щонайменше 12 000 людей безпосередньо постраждало від раптових повеней, викликаних сильними зливами в Південній Африці, а щонайменше 80 000 людей залишилося без електропостачання.
Одинадцять людей вже загинуло в Південній Африці через екстремальні погодні умови та зумовлені ними інтенсивні дощі й сильний вітер, – повідомляє The Guardian.
За 48 годин у південноафриканській провінції Західний Фокленд випало від 100 до 200 міліметрів опадів, що спричинило повені, а сильний вітер зривав дахи, обривав лінії електропередач і пошкоджував дороги.
За даними Департаменту з ліквідації наслідків стихійних лих Кейптауна, дванадцять тисяч людей безпосередньо постраждало від екстремальних погодних умов, а ще 80 тисяч залишилося без електропостачання. У Кейптауні було перекрито майже 80 доріг, а залізничне сполучення було призупинено.
За офіційними даними, наразі відомо, що загинуло одинадцять осіб, але ця кількість може виявитися вищою, коли повінь спаде.
Вісім із них загинуло від ураження електричним струмом, коли вода затопила незаконно під’єднані лінії електропередач – це звичне явище в бідних районах міста, де люди нелегально під’єднують електрику до своїх домівок. Повені зумовили відімкнення електромережі майже до п’ятнадцяти тисяч будинків.
Минулого року паводки, викликані зливами, вдарили не по південній, а по східній частині країни, в результаті чого загинуло понад 300 осіб в умовах екстремальної погоди.

У Південно-Африканській республіці нелегальні копачі шукали золото в одній із закинутих шахт. На місці стався вибух газу, загинуло понад тридцять людей. Більшість тіл неможливо підняти на поверхню, оскільки на місці все ще надзвичайно високий рівень метану.
Щонайменше 31 людина загинула в районі міста Велком у південноафриканській провінції Фрі-Стейт після вибуху газу в стовбурі закинутої шахти, повідомив місцевий уряд.
Жертви, ймовірно, були нелегальними копачами із сусіднього Лесото.
Вибух стався 18 червня, але більшість тіл усе ще знаходяться під землею, оскільки рівень метану в шахті залишається високий, тому рятувальники не можуть підійти до місця трагедії, йдеться в повідомленні міністерства з питань корисних копалин та енергетики.
Наразі нелегальним копачам, які працюють у цьому районі, вдалося підняти три тіла. Після вибуху шістнадцять копачів здалися правоохоронцям.

Рудольф Еразмус із Південної Африки не зрозумів, що саме відбувається, коли відчув, як по тілу пробіг холодок. Лише коли він повернувся вбік, то побачив, що на сидінні поруч із ним згорнулася змія, яка, ймовірно, переповзла через нього раніше. Єдина проблема полягала в тому, що це відбувалося на висоті близько 3 000 метрів, адже Еразм летів невеликим літаком Beechcraft Baron між Бломефонтейном і Преторією з чотирма іншими пасажирами на борту.
Змія була капською коброю, отруйною змією, укус якої може виявитися смертельним, якщо під рукою немає протиотрути.
Еразм боявся, що якщо хтось із пасажирів побачить тварину, то одразу зніметься паніка. Врешті-решт він вирішив повідомити їх, тож сказав те, чого, напевно, не хотів би почути жоден пасажир авіакомпанії: що на борту літака знаходиться отруйна змія і що він намагається якомога швидше посадити літак.
Еразм розповідає, що в той момент на борту запанувала могильна тиша. Літак зміг приземлитися в Велкомі, приблизно за 150 кілометрів від місця вильоту.
Пілот розповів пресі, що під час зльоту, ще на землі, співробітник аеропорту побачив змію, яка ховалася під літаком. Працівники авіакомпанії спробували зловити її, але не змогли. Але оскільки вони не бачили жодних слідів, то припустили, що їм вдалося її прогнати. Співробітники аеропорту марно шукали змію навіть після того, як літак приземлився.

Кількість жертв циклону «Фредді» на південному сході Африки вже незабаром може перевищити 1200 осіб. За даними місцевої влади, у Малаві, яка зазнала найбільших руйнувань, загинуло щонайменше 676 людей, ще 538 вважаються зниклими безвісти.
Спеціальна рятувальна команда з пошуковими собаками, місцева поліція та військові продовжують пошуки вцілілих, тож зниклі безвісти можуть бути оголошені загиблими лише після офіційного завершення операції.
За словами речника, у представників аварійно-рятувальних служб, які працюють у нових віддалених районах, попереду ще багато роботи.
«Фредді» був надзвичайно активним протягом тривалого часу. Циклон сформувався біля північного узбережжя Австралії і 21 лютого досяг узбережжя Мадагаскару.
Через кілька днів «Фредді» викликав сильні зливи в Мозамбіку та Зімбабве, що призвело до повеней в обох країнах. Відтак циклон зробив коло неподалік від узбережжя й після виходу з пари над теплими водами повернувся набагато сильнішим. Потім знову вдарив по Мадагаскару й Мозамбіку, а згодом по Малаві.
Десятки тисяч людей залишилися без даху над головою через сильні дощі, повені та зсуви. У Мозамбіку загинуло 165 осіб, на Мадагаскарі – 17.
На сьогодні циклон «Фредді» пройшов понад 8 тисяч кілометрів через Індійський океан, що робить його найбільш тривалим і руйнівним тропічним циклоном, від яких постраждав в останні роки південь Африки.

У південно-східній частині Африки жертвами тропічного циклону „Фредді” стали в трьох країнах понад 500 людей.
Про це 20 березня повідомило Reuters.
Агентство зазначає, що спричинені циклоном шторми вирують у регіоні вже місяць, найбільше від нього постраждали Малаві, Мозамбік і Мадагаскар.
Тільки в Малаві станом на вечір 20 березня зареєстрували 499 жертв „Фредді”, зниклими безвісти вважають 427 осіб, повідомляє 21 березня „Сіньхуа” з посиланням на місцеву владу.
Кількість постраждалих від циклону перевищує 1300 осіб.
У зв’язку зі стихійним лихом свої будинки змушено покинули понад 508 тис. жителів.
The North Africa Post пише, що внаслідок шторму, викликаного циклоном, було затоплено тисячі гектарів сільськогосподарських угідь, у кількох районах Малаві сталися зсуви ґрунту.

У Центральноафриканській Республіці повстанці здійснили атаку на золотодобувну шахту, яка експлуатується Китаєм, і вбили 9 громадян цієї країни та поранили ще двох, повідомляє місцева влада.
Напад стався через кілька днів після того, як озброєні люди викрали трьох громадян КНР біля кордону з Камеруном. Через цю подію президент республіки Фостен Арчандж Туадера вирушив до Китаю, щоб заспокоїти інвесторів.
Напад на золотий рудник «Чімболо» (Chimbolo), який почав працювати кілька днів тому, стався рано-вранці. Озброєні люди швидко здолали охорону й відкрили вогонь, повідомив Абель Матіпата, мер сусіднього поселення Бамбарі.
Наразі жодна організація не взяла на себе відповідальність за напад. Водночас припускають, що атаку здійснили повстанці Патріотичної асоціації, яку пов’язують із президентом Франсуа Бозізе.
У Центральноафриканській Республіці наприкінці 2012 року члени ополчення Séléka з північно-східного регіону країни, населеного переважно мусульманами, зайняли Бангі та скинули президента-християнина Франсуа Бозізе. Це спровокувало в країні громадянську війну.
Проти Séléka було сформовано християнське правоохоронне об’єднання під назвою Аnti-Balaka, котре, однак, як і Séléka, згодом розпалося на незліченні збройні групи.
Незважаючи на історичну мирну угоду, підписану 2019 року, більша частина території країни, багатої на золото й алмази, досі контролюється збройними формуваннями. Це перешкоджає видобутку мінеральних ресурсів. У 2020 році двоє китайців загинули під час бунту місцевих жителів проти роботи китайської шахти в Соссо Накомбо. А 2018-го розгнівані мешканці вбили трьох китайців після того, як унаслідок кораблетрощі загинув місцевий лідер, що супроводжував до шахти китайських працівників. Незважаючи на проблеми з безпекою, у країні продовжують діяти кілька компаній КНР.

Кількість жертв тропічного шторму «Фредді» на півдні Африки перевищила 400 осіб. Циклон зародився біля північного узбережжя Австралії і 21 лютого досяг Мадагаскару, а через кілька днів вдарив по Мозамбіку та Зімбабве.
Президент Малаві Лазарус Чаквера, який відвідав зону стихійного лиха, у четвер заявив, що кількість загиблих у країні зросла більш ніж удвічі: із 225 напередодні до 326, а тих, хто залишився без даху над головою, – до 183 159 осіб.
Глава держави в четвер відвідав Лікарню королеви Єлизавети й помолився разом із жертвами стихії. За останніми даними, унаслідок буревію в Малаві постраждали щонайменше 700 осіб.
Шторм, який з кінця лютого вже двічі вирував у регіоні, забрав життя 73 людей у Мозамбіку та 17 – на Мадагаскарі.
Циклон зародився біля північного узбережжя Австралії і 21 лютого досяг Мадагаскару, а через кілька днів Мозамбіку та Зімбабве. Сильні дощі спричинили повені в обох країнах.
Потім «Фредді» зробив петлю біля узбережжя й, увібравши велику кількість пари над теплими водами, повернувся набагато сильнішим, аби ще раз ударити по Мадагаскару, а в суботу знову досягнув Мозамбіку.
До четверга шторм розвіявся, але найближчими днями в деяких районах Малаві очікуються сильні дощі, які можуть призвести до повеней, ідеться в заяві міністерства природних ресурсів та зміни клімату країни. У суботу шторм удруге вдарив по Мозамбіку, деякі села були повністю відрізані від зовнішнього світу.
Для пошуку й порятунку людей влада мобілізувала човни та інші засоби. Багато сіл опинилися під водою, повідомив Пауло Томас, прессекретар мозамбіцького управління з ліквідації наслідків стихійних лих.
В останні роки «Фредді» є одним з найбільш тривалих і руйнівних тропічних штормів на півдні Африки.
