Összességében 336 500 embert érintett a rossz idő, akik közül több mint 6 ezren kényszerültek arra, hogy elhagyják otthonukat. Emellett az árvizek 26 kórházat, 120 iskolát és mintegy 64 lakóépületet pusztítottak el.

A Kongó folyó vízállása az elmúlt hat évtized legmagasabb szintjét érte el, a víz elöntötte a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság fővárosát, Kinshasát, ahol az utak egy része járhatatlanná vált a hömpölygő víz miatt. Egy közeli város, Kisangani polgármester elmondta, több mint 200 ház került víz alá.
A helyi tisztviselők szerint az elmúlt hónapokban több mint 300 ember halt meg az áradásokban.
Kinshasa szegénynegyedének lakói a BBC-nek úgy nyilatkoztak, a víz elöntötte az iskolákat, a kórházakat és a templomokat is.
„Itt éltem a rokonaimnál, most mindent elvesztettem” – mondta egy helyi nő. Egy másik lakos arról számolt be, hogy háza plafonig megtelt vízzel.
A Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság vízi útjait felügyelő hajózási ügynökség már december végén megkongatta a vészharangot, és arra figyelmeztetett, hogy a heves esőzések „rendkívüli áradásokat” okoznak majd a főváros környékén.
A heves esőzések miatt tavaly május óta pusztítanak áradások a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban, a természeti katasztrófa miatt több ezer ember tűnt el.
Kinshasában ugyan gyakoriak az áradások, de idén a Kongó folyó szokatlanul sokat, 6,26 métert emelkedett, amire utoljára az 1961-es rekordáradás idején volt példa.

Legkevesebb száz ember halálát okozták az elmúlt két hét esőzései és áradásai a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban – közölték a helyi hatóságok pénteken.
A december 11-i rendkívüli esőzések és áradások Dél-Kivu székhelyét Bukavut és térségét sújtották leginkább, a levonuló ár hidakat és házakat mosott el, jelentős kárt tett az infrastruktúrában, legkevesebb 15 ember meghalt. Az özönvízszerű esőzések következtében december 26-ról 27-re további 21 ember vesztette életét a bukavui régióban.
Zénon Karumba, Bukavu polgármestere a helyi sajtónak elmondta, hogy a halálos katasztrófák hátterében elsősorban az engedély nélküli ellenőrizetlen építkezések állnak.
A Bukavutól 120 kilométerre fekvő Mwenga térségében az áradások, valamint a föld- és lejtőcsuszamlások 42 ember halálát okozták.
Áradásokról szóló beszámolók érkeztek az afrikai ország középső részén fekvő Kaszai térségéből is, ahol a medréből kilépő folyók 22 ember halálát okozták Kanangában, a fővárosban. A megáradt folyók – helyi jelentések szerint – jelentős anyagi kárt okoztak a mintegy 1,5 millió lakosú régióban.

Legkevesebb 23 civil életét vesztette hétfőre virradó éjszaka egy faluban a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság keleti részén a Szövetséges Demokratikus Erők (ADF) nevű ugandai iszlamista milíciának tulajdonított támadásban – közölték helyi vezetők.
Roger Wangeve, egy helyi civil szervezet elnöke szerint 24-en haltak meg az ADF támadásában Észak-Kivu tartomány Beni járásának Makugwe falujában. Saidi Balikwisha tartományi képviselő 23 meggyilkolt emberről beszélt. A képviselő szorgalmazta, hogy jól felszerelt és kiképzett katonákat vezényeljenek a térségbe „az ellenség támadásainak a megelőzése céljából”.
Roger Wangeve szerint az áldozatok között 17-en egy italmérésben söröztek, a milicisták valamennyiüket lemészárolták.
Legalább hét lakóházat felgyújtottak, három gyógyszertárat és 11 boltot kifosztottak, a magukkal hurcolt civilek száma egyelőre nem ismert – közölte Wangeve.
Az Észak-Kivu tartományban és a szomszédos Ituriban tevékenykedő ADF, amelyet az Iszlám Állam terrorszervezet kelet-afrikai szárnyaként tart számon, egyike a leginkább véreskezű dzsihadista szervezeteknek a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság keleti térségében. Legutóbb január 15-én robbantottak pokolgépet egy evangélikus templomban, a merényletben legalább 14-en meghaltak és 63-an megsebesültek.
Az Egyesült Államok 2021-ben vette fel az ADF-et a külföldi terrorszervezetek listájára.

Az ugandai határ melletti Kasindi térségében a kongói és az ugandai kormányerők már korábban műveleteket hajtottak végre az Iszlám Állam terrorszervezettel szövetséges ADF ellen, amelyet azzal vádolnak, hogy az utóbbi két évben több száz falusit mészárolt le a környéken.
A tartományban az ADF mellet az M23 nevű, többségében tuszikból álló felkelőcsoport is aktív.
