A fedélzeten több mint százan tartózkodtak, és jelentős mennyiségű árut is szállított. A baleset Inongo városnál következett be, Kinshasától északkeletre. A halálos áldozatok között több gyermek is van.
A térségben – ahol kiemelt jelentősége van a folyami hajózásnak – ez már a negyedik hasonló tragédia volt idén. Májusban 20-an, októberben 78-an haltak meg hajóbalesetben az országban.

Iszlamista fegyveresek több mint húsz embert megöltek egy faluban a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság keleti részén, Észak-Kivu tartományban – közölték a helyi hatóságok csütörtökön.
A vérengzést szerdán követték el a gyanú szerint a Szövetséges Demokratikus Erők (ADF) elnevezésű csoport tagjai a Béni régióban lévő Mayikengo faluban. Arra kérték az embereket, hogy gyűljenek össze a piactéren egy tanácskozásra, majd ott lőfegyverekkel és bozótvágó késekkel rájuk támadtak. A halálos áldozatok számát 20 és 30 közé teszik.
A saját magát az Iszlám Állam terrorszervezet szövetségesének valló ADF ugandai lázadócsoport, de már csaknem három évtizede a kelet-kongói dzsungelekből irányítják műveleteiket. Múlt héten arról érkeztek hírek, hogy az ADF tagjai több mint 80 emberrel végeztek hasonló támadásokban Észak-Kivu tartományban.

A tájékoztatás szerint a hajó az erős szél miatt borult fel. Robert Ndjalonga, Ituri tartomány polgári védelmének egyik vezetője a sajtónak azt mondta, a balesteben odaveszett több mint öt tonnányi, a tartománnyal határos Ugandából hozott rakomány is.
Jóllehet a Kongói DK-ban a szárazföldi utak rossz állapota miatt a folyók fontos szállítási és közlekedési útvonalak, az országban gyakoriak a hajóbalesetek, részben a vízi járművek túlterheltsége miatt.

A Kongó folyó vízállása az elmúlt hat évtized legmagasabb szintjét érte el, a víz elöntötte a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság fővárosát, Kinshasát, ahol az utak egy része járhatatlanná vált a hömpölygő víz miatt. Egy közeli város, Kisangani polgármester elmondta, több mint 200 ház került víz alá.
A helyi tisztviselők szerint az elmúlt hónapokban több mint 300 ember halt meg az áradásokban.
Kinshasa szegénynegyedének lakói a BBC-nek úgy nyilatkoztak, a víz elöntötte az iskolákat, a kórházakat és a templomokat is.
„Itt éltem a rokonaimnál, most mindent elvesztettem” – mondta egy helyi nő. Egy másik lakos arról számolt be, hogy háza plafonig megtelt vízzel.
A Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság vízi útjait felügyelő hajózási ügynökség már december végén megkongatta a vészharangot, és arra figyelmeztetett, hogy a heves esőzések „rendkívüli áradásokat” okoznak majd a főváros környékén.
A heves esőzések miatt tavaly május óta pusztítanak áradások a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban, a természeti katasztrófa miatt több ezer ember tűnt el.
Kinshasában ugyan gyakoriak az áradások, de idén a Kongó folyó szokatlanul sokat, 6,26 métert emelkedett, amire utoljára az 1961-es rekordáradás idején volt példa.

A hajó Mbandaka kikötőjéből indult a több mint 300 kilométerre található Bolombába. Szemtanúk beszámolói szerint túlzsúfolt volt és ezért borulhatott fel.
Az utasok pontos száma egyelőre nem ismert.
A Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban gyakoriak a folyami balesetek, különösen a Kongón. A szerencsétlenségek legfőbb oka a hajók rossz műszaki állapota, illetve túlzsúfoltságuk szokott lenni.

Szexuális bántalmazás gyanújával őrizetbe vettek nyolc dél-afrikai ENSZ-békefenntartót a Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaságban – közölte neve elhallgatását kérve csütörtökön a Reuters hírügynökséggel egy világszervezeti és egy kongói tisztségviselő.
A visszaélésekről szóló jelentésekre reagálva az ENSZ kongói békemissziója, a MONUSCO közleményben erősítette meg a békefenntartók felfüggesztését, további részleteket azonban nem közöltek. Az ENSZ belső vizsgálatot rendelt el a történtek kivizsgálására.
Az ENSZ-forrás szerint a visszaéléseket a dél-afrikai kontingens táborainak közelében működő bordélyházakban követték el.
A dél-afrikai védelmi minisztérium és a külügyminisztérium, valamint a kongói kormány szóvivői nem nyilatkoztak az ügyben.
Az ENSZ szerda késő este kiadott közleményében azt írta, hogy a zéró tolerancia elvével összhangban már megkezdődtek a szexuális kizsákmányolással és a szexuális visszaélés bármilyen formáival szembeni óvintézkedések.
A szervezet a jelenlegi rendszerben kivizsgálhatja a történteket, elrendelheti a békefenntartók felfüggesztését, vádemelésre azonban át kell adnia a gyanúsítottakat az ügyészségnek.
Korábban Kongóban, Haitin és a Közép-afrikai Köztársaságban működő ENSZ-békemissziókban derült fény hasonló szexuális visszaélésekre, amelyek botrányt okoztak. Habár az ENSZ az elmúlt években különleges egységeket hozott létre a szexuális visszaélések elleni küzdelem és az áldozatok segítése érdekében, a visszaéléseknek nem sikerült elejét venni.
Az ENSZ békemisszióját eredetileg a második kongói polgárháború (1998-2003) alatt indították el, a misszió mandátumát 2010-ben megújították. A misszióban mintegy 17 ezren vesznek részt, és jelentős szerepet vállalnak az ország keleti részében garázdálkodó milíciákkal és felkelőkkel szembeni harcban.

A Kongói Demokratikus Köztársaság ásványkincsekben rendkívül gazdag, keleti része a világ egyik legveszélyesebb térségének számít: az amerikai kormányzati információk szerint körülbelül 130 különböző fegyveres milícia aktív a területen, gyakoriak a kínzások és a nemi erőszak.
A Codeco milícia és más fegyveres csoportok erőszakcselekményei miatt nemzetközi dokumentumokban 1,7 millióra teszik az Ituri tartományban élő belső menekültek számát.

Múlthét csütörtök éjszaka Dél-Kivu tartományra nagy mennyiségű eső zúdult . A hatóságok szerint nemcsak a folyók léptek ki medrükből, de több földcsuszamlást is jelentettek, amelyekben házak dőltek össze. Az ország történetének egyik legsúlyosabb természeti katasztrófájában eddig összesen 411 ember holttestét találták meg, és 5525 embert pedig eltűntként tartanak nyilván, valamint az anyagi kár is jelentős – tájékoztatott a tartomány Kalehe nevű településének vezetője
Az esőzések okozta földcsuszamlások a földdel tették egyenlővé az épületeket a Dél-Kivu tartományban található Kalehe közelében fekvő falvakban, ahol a hatóságok holttestek tömegére bukkantak, sok közöttük a nő és a gyerek.
A mentési munkákat azonnal megkezdték, nagyon sok ház összeomlott, a katasztrófavédelem és a vöröskereszt igyekszik szállást biztosítani azoknak, akik fedél nélkül maradtak. Miközben a helyiek az elhunytak számára tömegsírokat ásnak, a vöröskereszt munkatársai az otthon nélkül maradt és sebesült emberek ellátásához szükséges felszerelések hiányára hívták fel a figyelmet.
A kongói kormány illetékesei, köztük több miniszter hétfőn érkezett a helyszínre, hogy részt vegyenek a humanitárius segélynyújtás és a katasztrófavédelem koordinálásában.
A jelenlegi csapadékos időszak, mely leginkább az ország keleti részét érinti, várhatóan május végéig tart. A megáradt folyók a szomszédos országokban is súlyos károkat okoztak. Ruandában 127, míg Ugandában hat ember vesztette életét.

Théo Ngwabidje figyelmeztetett, hogy az áldozatok száma a következő napokban a folytatódó heves áradások miatt tovább növekedhet. Félix Tshisekedi kongói elnök hétfőre nemzeti gyásznapot hirdetett a katasztrófa miatt.
A kongói kormány szóvivője, Partick Muyaya elmondta, hogy több miniszter ellátogat a helyszínre, hogy részt vegyenek a humanitárius segélynyújtás és a katasztrófavédelem koordinálásában.
A helyi hatóságok beszámolói szerint a nagy mennyiségű eső csütörtök éjszaka zúdult a térségre, s nem csak a folyók léptek ki medrükből, de több földcsuszamlást is jelentettek, amelyekben házak dőltek össze.
A jelenlegi csapadékos időszak, mely leginkább az ország keleti részét érinti, várhatóan május végéig tart. A megáradt folyók a szomszédos országokban is súlyos károkat okoztak: Ruandában 127, míg Ugandában hat ember vesztette életét.
