Szerdán futótűz érte el az Alberta állambeli Jasper települést Kanadában, ahonnan a katasztrófa miatt már előző nap mintegy 25 ezer embert evakuáltak.
A hatóságok közlése szerint Kanada nyugati Alberta és Brit Columbia tartományaiban több mint 600 tűzfészek alakult ki. A tűzoltók nagy erőkkel küzdenek számos kulcsfontosságú létesítmény, így a Trans Mountain olajvezeték biztonságban tartásáért – közölték a hatóságok.
A vezeték, amely napi 890 ezer hordó olajat képes szállítani Edmontonból Vancouverbe, a Sziklás-hegységben lévő nemzeti parkon húzódik keresztül, elhaladva a festői turistavárosnak tartott Jasper mellett.
A kanadai nemzeti parkokat kezelő hatóság a Facebook közösségi oldalon azt írta: „A tűzoltók (…) azon dolgoznak, hogy a lehető legtöbb építményt megmentsék, és megvédjék a kulcsfontosságú infrastruktúrát, beleértve a szennyvíztisztító telepet, a kommunikációs létesítményeket és a Trans Mountain olajvezetéket”.
Justin Trudeau kanadai miniszterelnök közölte, hogy kormánya jóváhagyta Alberta szövetségi támogatás iránti kérelmét, így mások mellett a hadsereg segítségét igénybe véve bekapcsolódnak a tűzoltásba és a kimenekítési műveletekbe.
A romló levegőminőség miatt számos tűzoltó és mások, akiknek nem volt megfelelő légzőkészülékük, kénytelenek voltak a mintegy száz kilométerre lévő Hinton városába menekülni – közölték a park hatóságai szerda este a Facebookon.
A meteorológiai előrejelzések szerint mindazonáltal rövid időn belül esőre számíthatnak a körzetben.

Lakóhelyük azonnali elhagyására szólították fel a kanadai hatóságok a Brit Columbia tartomány északkeleti részén élő összes lakost az erdőtüzek gyors terjedése miatt.
A Kanada legnyugatibb tartományában pénteken kitört erdőtűz kiterjedése szombatra csaknem a duplájára nőtt, és felperzselt több mint négyezer hektárnyi területet, két kilométerre megközelítve Fort Nelson város határát. Ez látható az erdőtüzekről tájékoztató Wildfire Service térképein.
A területen nem lehet élelmiszert vásárolni, és a sürgősségi szolgálatok sem működnek – figyelmeztette a hátramaradt lakosságot közös közleményben a tartomány illetékes önkormányzata és a város közelében lévő First Nation nevű őslakos közösség.
Rob Fraser polgármester elmondása szerint 3500 embert a rendőrség segítségével már kitelepítettek Fort Nelsonból és környékéről. A város környékén jelenleg három jelentős nagyságú erdőtűz is tombol – tette hozzá.
Szombaton a szomszédos Alberta államban is riasztást adtak ki erdőtüzek miatt. A hatóságok Edmond városban nagyon magas kockázatú levegőszennyezésre figyelmeztettek. Szintén riasztást adtak ki egy Fort McMurry-től 25 kilométerre kialakult erdőtűz miatt, amely az autópályán ronthatja a látási viszonyokat, de evakuálási utasítást még nem adtak ki.
Kanadában 2023-ban rekordszámú erdőtűz alakult ki, amely több tízezer Brit Columbia tartománybeli lakos kitelepítését kényszerítette ki. Az erdőtüzek füstje az Egyesült Államok közeli területeire is átterjedt.

A 22 éves, Kanadában élő Amandip Szinghet gyilkosság gyanújával tartóztatták le.
A rendőrség május elején már három, ugyancsak több éve Kanadában élő indiai állampolgárt letartóztatott az ügyben, mely diplomáciai konfliktushoz vezetett Kanada és India között, miután Justin Trudeau kanadai miniszterelnök tavaly szeptemberben azt mondta: hiteles bizonyítékok vannak arra, hogy Újdelhi által megbízott ügynökök állnak a gyilkosság mögött.
Az 1997-ben Kanadába érkezett Hardip Szingh Nidzsar egy Indián belüli független szikh tagállam létrehozásáért küzdő mozgalom aktivistája volt. Holttestét tavaly június 18-án a Brit Columbia tartománybeli Surrey-ban, a Guru Nanak Szikh Gurdvara templom parkolójában álló autójában találták meg.
Nidzsart az indiai hatóságok terrorizmus és gyilkosságra való összeesküvés vádjával körözték. A férfi az ellene felhozott vádakat kanadai sajtójelentések szerint mindig is tagadta.

Az utóbbi napokban több nagy kiterjedésű erdőtűz is kitört Kanada nyugati, aszály sújtotta területén. A hatóságok aggódnak, mert úgy vélik, hogy egy újabb „katasztrofális” nyárra lehet számítani.
A Csendes-óceán partján fekvő Brit Columbia tartományban, Cariboo régióban egy ember okozta erdőtűz már 1600 hektárt felperzselt, a lángok a múlt hét végén gyorsan terjedtek, és a tűzoltók egyelőre nem tudják megfékezni. A közelben élőket még nem kellett evakuálni.
„Brit Columbia tartományban jelenleg 110-nél is több aktív erdőtüzet tartanak számon, ezek közül több még tavaly keletkezett. A térségben „hihetetlen mértékű a szárazság”, és az erdőtüzek szezonja idén különösen korán kezdődött” – mondta el az AFP francia hírügynökségnek Madison Dahl, a helyi tűzoltóság munkatársa.
A szomszédos Alberta tartományban 66 helyen ég a növényzet, ezek közül 36 esetben még a 2023-as szezonban keletkezett erdőtűzről van szó.
Tavaly Kanada történetének legpusztítóbb erdőtűz-szezonját élte át: az országban több mint 15 millió hektár terület égett le, és mintegy 230 ezer embert kellett evakuálni a fenyegető lángok miatt. Az oltási munkálatok alatt nyolc tűzoltó életét vesztette.

Tavaly áprilisban több mint húszmillió kanadai dollár értékű, 6600 darab aranyrudat és jelentős összegű készpénzt loptak el a torontói Pearson repülőtérről.
A vádlottak között szerepel az Air Canada légitársaság raktárának egyik alkalmazottja és egy korábbi menedzsere is, aki a betörést követően körbevezette a rendőröket a létesítményben. A büntetőeljárás alá vont személyek között van egy ékszerüzlet tulajdonosa is.
„Ez egy szenzációs sztori, amelyről viccelődve azt szoktuk mondani, hogy egy Netflix-sorozatba való” – mondta Nishan Duraiappah, Peel megyei rendőrfőnök.
Mike Mavity nyomozó elmondta, hogy a külföldi valutát és a 419 kilogramm aranyat, amelyet Zürichből rendeltek az Air Canada egyik járatán szállították tavaly április 17-én.
Mavity szerint aznap késő délután a légitársaság raktárához egy teherautó érkezett, amelynek sofőrje hamis fuvarlevelet mutatott fel. „Beépített emberekre volt szükségük az Air Canadában, hogy véghez vihessék ezt a lopást” – tette hozzá.
„Úgy gondoljuk, beolvasztották az aranyat, a haszonból pedig illegális fegyvereket vásároltak” – ismertette tovább Mavity.
Az ügyben eddig öt vádlottat vettek őrizetbe, akik időközben óvadék ellenében feltételesen szabadlábra kerülhettek. Egy hatodik vádlottat, a teherautó feltételezett sofőrjét az Egyesült Államokban egy közúti ellenőrzés során fogták el és tartják őrizetben illegális fegyvertartás és csempészet címén. Utóbbi gyanúsított bérelt autójában az amerikai hatóságok szerint 65 darab illegális fegyvert foglaltak le, amelyeket Kanadába akart csempészni.
További három embert, köztük a volt menedzsert körözik.
A helyi rendőrség szerint mindössze 90 ezer kanadai dollárnak megfelelő aranyat tudtak visszaszerezni.

A kettős ügynökök keresése Oroszországból és más olyan országokból származó bevándorlók körében zajlik, amelyek a Szovjetunió részei vagy befolyása alatt álltak. A hírszerzési főigazgatóság szerint a Kreml különleges szolgálata elsősorban az orosz nyelvű kanadai tömegmédián keresztül népszerűsíti felhívásait.
Például 2024 márciusában az FSZB vonatkozó felhívását szórólapmelléklet formájában terjesztették a Nasa Kanada nyomtatott kiadvánnyal. Ez olyan újság, amelyet ingyenesen terjesztenek az európai árukat népszerűsítő boltokban, az orosz éttermekben, a metrón, Torontó egyes iskoláiban, kórházaiban és lakóparkjaiban. Az egész pikantériája, hogy ez a sajtótermék demokratikusként és Putyin-ellenesként határozza meg magát, de ez csak álarc, és a helyi biztonsági struktúrák figyelmének elterelése lehet – áll a jelentésben.

A kanadai Niagara Fallsban szükségállapotot hirdettek arra készülve, hogy akár egymillió látogató is érkezhet a városba az április eleji napfogyatkozásra.
Az április 8-án bekövetkező napfogyatkozás különlegessége, hogy 1979 óta először lesz látható a Niagara-vízesés környékén, mely a National Geographic szerint a lehető legjobb rálátást nyújtja a jelenségre.
Jim Diodati, Niagara Falls polgármestere március elején azt mondta, hogy a városban egymillió látogató is összegyűlhet ezen a napon. Ezért a regionális önkormányzat az eseményre való biztonságos felkészülés érdekében rendkívüli állapotot hirdetett ki csütörtökön.
A jeles napon jelentős forgalmi dugók, a segélyszolgálatok fokozott igénybevétele és a mobiltelefon-hálózat túlterhelése várható.
A napfogyatkozás reggelre eléri Mexikó csendes-óceáni partvidékét, majd átlósan átvág az Egyesült Államokon Texastól Maine-ig, s késő délutánra Kanada keleti részén búcsúzik a nézőközönségtől. A kontinens többi részén részleges napfogyatkozás lesz látható – írja a The Guardian.

A kanadai rendőrség egy 19 éves Srí Lanka-i diákot gyanúsít azzal, hogy késsel megölt hat embert, akikkel együtt élt Ottawában – közölte csütörtökön a főváros rendőrfőnöke.
Eric Stubbs ottawai rendőrfőnök szerint a Febrio De-Zoysa néven azonosított elkövetőt hatrendbeli gyilkossággal és egyrendbeli gyilkossági kísérlettel vádolják.
Stubbs elmondta, hogy az áldozatok szintén Srí Lanka-i állampolgárok, akik nemrég érkeztek Kanadába. A halottak között van egy 35 éves nő és négy kisgyermeke, köztük egy két és fél hónapos csecsemő, valamint a család egy 40 éves ismerőse. A hetedik áldozat a családapa, akit súlyos, de nem életveszélyes sérülésekkel szállítottak kórházba.
A feltételezett elkövetőt szerdán éjszaka fogták el, röviddel a bűncselekmény elkövetése után.
Justin Trudeau kanadai miniszterelnök borzalmas tragédiának nevezte a történteket.
Az ilyen erőszakcselekmények ritkaságnak számítanak Kanadában. Az egymillió lakosú Ottawában tavaly 14, az azt megelőző évben pedig 15 gyilkosságot követtek el.

Az FBI vizsgálja a szerdán az Egyesült Államok és Kanada közötti Rainbow-híd határátkelőnél történt autórobbantást, amely a Fox News forrásai szerint terrorista támadás volt.
Az autóban jelentős mennyiségű robbanóanyag volt és az autóban utazó két terrorista meghalt. A támadásban egy határőr is megsérült.
Az autó az Egyesült Államokból Kanadába tartott, és a határőr-bódé felé próbáltak hajtani.
A források szerint a környéken minden hidat lezártak, és minden kormányzati épületet kiürítettek.
A robbanásban érintett 27 éves határőrt kisebb sérülésekkel, többek között hátfájással és kisebb vágásokkal szállítottak a Niagara Falls Memorial Kórházba, állapota nem súlyos.
