Iránnak tartózkodnia kell az erőszak alkalmazásától és mindenfajta provokációtól, legfontosabb ugyanis megakadályozni, hogy elmérgesedjen a helyzet, illetve újabb konfliktus alakuljon ki – jelentette ki a NATO-főtitkár Brüsszelben, a katonai szövetség legfőbb politikai döntéshozó testülete, az Észak-atlanti Tanács rendkívüli, nagyköveti szintű ülését követően hétfőn.
Jens Stoltenberg, a közel-keleti feszültség növekedése miatt
összehívott ülést követően tartott rövid sajtótájékoztatóján kijelentette: a
NATO és szövetségesei kiállnak az Egyesült Államok mellett Kászim Szulejmáni
tábornok meggyilkolása ügyében, a szövetséges országok ugyanis súlyos
aggodalmukat fejezik ki a régió egészét destabilizálni képes iráni
atomtevékenység, valamint az iráni vezetés terrorista csoportokat támogató
politikája miatt.
A NATO egyetért abban, hogy sohasem lehet atomfegyver Irán
birtokában, továbbá minden felet felelősségteljes viselkedésre és
önkorlátozásra szólít fel – emelte ki a főtitkár.
Mint mondta, a szövetség részt vesz az Iszlám Állam nevű
terrorszervezet felszámolására szerveződött globális koalíció munkájában,
illetve a terrorszervezet visszatérésének megakadályozásában, ezért a NATO
iraki kiképző missziója fontos hozzájárulás a koalíció erőfeszítéseihez. Az ott
szolgáló katonák életének védelme, biztonságuk szavatolása azonban kiemelkedő
fontosságú – húzta alá.
A NATO továbbra is elkötelezett a nemzetközi terrorizmus
elleni küzdelem mellett, ezért kész arra, hogy folytassa a kiképzési
tevékenységet, amikor azt a helyzet megengedi – tette hozzá Stoltenberg.
A NATO szombaton arról döntött, hogy felfüggeszti iraki
kiképző műveleteit, és felfüggesztette akcióit az Iszlám Állam nevű
terrorszervezet ellen küzdő, amerikai vezetésű nemzetközi szövetség is. A
döntést azt követően hozták meg, hogy pénteken az amerikai légierő célzott
csapással megölte Kászim Szulejmánit, az iráni Forradalmi Gárda elitegysége, az
al-Kudsz brigád parancsnokát és Abu Mahdi al-Muhandiszt, a Népi Mozgósítási
Erők nevű, iráni támogatást élvező milicistákat tömörítő ernyőszervezet
vezetőjét.
