A több hétig tartó nyirkos időjárás után lecsapott eső csak rontja a körülményeket Új-Zéland így is átázott táján. A szakértők az évszakhoz képest nem szokványos csapadékos időjárást egy keskeny vízgőzáramnak, vagy egy „légköri folyónak” tulajdonítják, amely az ország felett terül el – írja a Reuters.
A Metservice meteorológiai szolgálat előrejelzése szerint a Déli-sziget északi részén jóval több mint 300 milliméter eső esett az elmúlt 24 órában. A Déli-sziget nyugati részén és az Északi-sziget északi részén heves esőzésekre figyelmeztetnek.
A Metservice adatai szerint a Déli-szigeten fekvő Nelson városában kedd dél óta 106 milliméternyi eső esett, ami jóval meghaladja az egész augusztusban mért 80 milliméteres átlagos csapadékmennyiséget.
Új-Zéland északi szigetén, az ország legnagyobb városában, Aucklandben heves esőzés és viharos szél miatt van érvényben figyelmeztetés, egyelőre azonban minimális fennakadásokról számoltak be.
A hatóságok közlése szerint a több mint 50 ezer lakosú Nelsonban már több mint 230 otthont evakuáltak, közintézményeket és utakat is lezártak. A városi tanács honlapján arra figyelmeztet, hogy a folytatódó esőzés további földcsuszamlásokat, áradásokat és evakuálásokat okozhat.
Nelson polgármestere, Rachel Reese az új-zélandi AM televíziónak elmondta, hogy bár a város komolyabb incidensek nélkül vészelte át az éjszakát, az infrastruktúra komoly nyomás alatt volt. Elmondása szerint a sok szennyvíztúlfolyással volt a legtöbb probléma éjszaka.
A sziget nyugati partján a Buller kerületi tanács közleménye szerint 160, korábban evakuált lakos térhetett vissza az otthonába, hogy felmérje az ott keletkezett károkat. Valamint arra figyelmeztettek, hogy további esőzés jöhet.

Emberi maradványokat találtak aukción elárverezett bőröndökben Új-Zélandon. A bőröndöket egy család vásárolta meg, miután egy aucklandi aukción megnyerte egy tárolóhelyiség tartalmának tulajdonjogát.
A maradványokat akkor találták meg, amikor visszatértek az otthonunkhoz, és elkezdték kipakolni a vásáron megszerzett holmikat – írja a BBC.
Az eset még múlt hét csütörtökön történt, mikor egy aucklandi család megnyerte egy helyi raktározási cégtől az egyik raktáruk teljes tartalmát. A holmik között az NzHeraldnak nyilatkozó egyik környékbeli szerint a bőröndök mellett több gyerekjáték és babakocsi is volt.
Egy másik szomszéd a lapnak azt is elmondta, hogy az út túloldalán állt, mikor a család felnyitotta a bőröndöket, és látta, ahogy a család hirtelen pánikba esik. Több szomszéd pedig arról számolt be, hogy irtózatos bűz volt. A család nem sokkal a történtek után elhagyta a házat, amire egy közeli hozzátartozójuk vigyázott egy darabig.
A rendőrség gyilkosság gyanújával indított nyomozást, és próbálják azonosítani a maradványokat. A hírek szerint egyelőre nem tisztázott pontosan, hány ember maradványait találták meg. A rendőrség szerint a családnak vélhetően nem volt köze a gyilkossághoz.

Az egészségügyi minisztérium adatai alapján a július 16-ig tartó héten 151 haláleset történt a vírus miatt, míg az előző hullám legrosszabb hetében 115 volt a halálesetek száma. Az új omikron-variáns jelenleg Új-Zélandon fertőz leginkább, közel 65 ezer aktív esetet regisztráltak a múlt héten, bár a hatóságok szerint sok fertőzésről így sem érkezett hivatalos bejelentés.
A sürgősségi osztályok, a háziorvosi rendelők és az egészségügyi központok komoly nyomásnak vannak kitéve, bár az egészségügyi minisztérium adatai szerint a kórházi kezelések száma még mindig elmarad a márciusi csúcs idején tapasztaltaktól.
Az új-zélandi kormány egyelőre nem szeretne korlátozó lépésekkel védekezni a jelenlegi helyzet ellen, így sem a maszkviselés, sem pedig a nyilvános összejövetelek korlátozása nem szerepel a terveik között.
Iona Holsted, az oktatási minisztérium vezetője azt tanácsolta az iskoláknak, hogy tegyék kötelezővé a maszkok viselését a diákok számára, akik jövő héten térnek vissza az iskolapadba a nyári vakációból.

Több ezren vonultak fel csütörtökön Új-Zéland fővárosában, Wellingtonban, hogy tiltakozzanak a Covid-19 elleni oltási kötelezettség és a korlátozások ellen, miközben az ország elérte a 90%-os átoltottsági szintet.
Az Új-Zélandon bevezetett szigorú lezárások és oltási akciók ugyan segítettek alacsonyan tartani a koronavírus-fertőzések és az ezzel összefüggő halálesetek számát, sokan úgy gondolják: elég volt. A kormány eddig a pedagógusok, az egészségügyi dolgozók, a rendőrök és más közszolgálati szektorban dolgozók számára írta elő az oltás felvételét.
A növekvő nyomás hatására Jacinda Ardern miniszterelnök enyhített a legtöbb korlátozáson a karácsonyi szünet előtt. A szigetország nemzetközi határai azonban továbbra is zárva maradnak a külvilág előtt, és csak fokozatosan nyitják meg őket a jövő évtől.

Az új-zélandi egészségügyi minisztérium oltási illetékese, Astrid Koornneef jelezte: komolyan veszik az esetet, és nagyon aggódnak. Felhívta rá a figyelmet, hogy azok, akik nem oltatják be magukat, nemcsak saját magukat, hanem barátaikat, családjukat, közösségüket, és az őket valaha kezelő egészségügyi szakembereket is veszélyeztetik.
A dpa német hírügynökség azt írta: Új-Zélandon nincs szükség fényképes azonosítóra a vakcina felvételéhez.
Az egészségügyi minisztérium egyik szóvivője korábban elmondta: úgy vélik, hogy az azonosítási folyamat szigorítása csökkentené az oltási kedvet. Hozzátette: azok többsége, akik nem rendelkeznek fényképes személyazonosító okmánnyal, a fokozottan sérülékeny csoportokból – hajléktalanok, idősek, fiatalok, fogyatékossággal élők – kerül ki. Megjegyezte: nem szeretnék, ha ők ezért kimaradnának az oltásból.
Új-Zélandon sok létesítménybe csak a hazai oltási igazolvány birtokában engedik be az embereket. Az ötmilliós ország lakosságának körülbelül 89 százaléka teljesen be van oltva.
Új-Zélandon eddig 12 783 fertőzöttje és 46 halálos áldozata van a koronavírusnak a Johns Hopkins baltimore-i egyetem legfrissebb adatai szerint.

Egy 5,9-es erősségű földrengés rázta meg a parlamentet Wellingtonban pénteken, amikor Jacinda Ardern sajtótájékoztatót tartott az ország új oltási céljairól – írja a The Guardian. Jacinda Ardern új-zélandi miniszterelnök olyan nyugalommal reagálta le a földrengést, mintha az egy mindennapos, természetes napirendi pont lenne.
A rengés a sajtótájékoztató egyik riporteri kérdésének felénél kezdődött. Ardern a pódiumot szorongatta, amikor a rengés elkezdődött, majd vigyorogva fordult vissza a riporterhez: „Á, elnézést, egy kis figyelemelterelés – megismételné a kérdést?” – mondta a miniszterelnök.
A Geonet szerint az 5,9-es erősségű rengés 210 km mélyen csapott le az Északi-sziget középső részén. A Geonet, amely a lakosság földrengésekről szóló bejelentéseit figyeli, elmondása szerint 25 000 ember jelentett rengést. Jelentős károkat nem jegyeztek fel.
Új-Zélandon, különösen Wellingtonban rendszeresen előfordulnak kisebb földrengések. A Geonet az elmúlt évben több, mint 1350 4-es erősségűnél erősebb földrengést regisztrált. Új-Zéland lesz az első ország, amely a pénzügyi vállalatokat az éghajlati kockázatokkal szembeni fellépésre kötelezi.

Első alkalommal szedett halálos áldozatot az új típusú koronavírus delta variánsa Új-Zélandon; szombaton 20 újabb fertőzöttet találtak Aucklandben, ahol a legújabb járványhullám felütötte a fejét.
Az egészségügyi hatóságok tájékoztatása szerint az áldozat egy kilencvenes éveiben lévő nő, akinek krónikus betegségei is voltak. Új-Zélandon február közepe óta nem volt halálos áldozata a járványnak.
„Minden halál arra emlékeztet, hogy milyen károkat okoz a Covid-19, ha bejut közösségünkbe” – fogalmazott közleményében Jacinda Ardern új-zélandi kormányfő. „Az idősebb új-zélandiak és a krónikus betegek vannak a legnagyobb veszélyben, és éppen ezért fontos eszközt jelentenek a lezárások a vírus feltartóztatásában” – hangoztatta a miniszterelnök.
Aucklandben augusztus közepe óta szigorú korlátozások vannak érvényben, amióta megjelent a városban a delta variáns. A szigetország többi részén is arra kérték az embereket, hogy, ha lehet, maradjanak otthon. Az iskolák, kávézók, éttermek és a nyilvános helyek többsége is zárva van.
Jelenleg 782 aktív fertőzöttről tudnak az új-zélandi hatóságok; 765-ről Aucklandben, 17-ről pedig a fővárosban, Wellingtonban. Az ötmillió lakosú országban 3392 ember kapta el a vírust a járvány kezdete óta, amelynek a szigetországban 27 halálos áldozata van.
Kubában eközben országos kampányt indított a kormány a 2 és 18 év közötti gyerekek beoltására az új típusú koronavírus ellen. Bár korábban Kína és Venezuela is bejelentette, hogy megkezdik a gyerekek vakcinázását, Kuba az első, ahol ez már meg is kezdődött, miközben a kommunista ország egészségügyi rendszere teljesítőképessége határához közelít az esetszámok emelkedése miatt. Az ország kommunista vezetése emellett a gyerekek beoltását az iskolák újranyitásának feltételéül szabta.
Kubában kubai fejlesztésű és gyártású Abdala és Soberana vakcinával oltják be először a 12 és 18 év közöttieket, majd szeptember 15-től a 2 és 11 év közötti gyerekeket.
A szigetország iskolái 2020 tavasza óta zárva vannak, csak pár hétre nyitottak újra az előző tanév végén. Azóta minden diák televízión keresztül követhetett tanórákat, és hétfőtől, a kubai iskolakezdés napjától is egyelőre ez vár rájuk. A kormány döntése értelmében az oktatási intézményeket fokozatosan fogják újra megnyitni októberben és novemberben, ha a gyerekek is megkapják a védőoltást.
A 11 millió lakosú, karibi szigetországban eddig 672 599 fertőzöttet regisztráltak, és 5538-an haltak bele a Covid-19-be.
