A San Francisco-öböl térségében egy példátlan algavirágzás (vörös árapály) miatt halak és más tengeri élőlények ezrei pusztulnak el.
A parta sodródott tetemek óriási bűzt okoznak, de a szakértők arra figyelmeztetnek, hogy ez még csak a kezdet, hétvégén ugyanis újabb hullám várható.
Az elhullott halak a múlt héten kezdtek felhalmozódni a partokon és a strandokon. A helyiek arról számoltak be, hogy helyenként rozsdaszínű lett a víz. Ez hívják vörös árapálynak.
Szerdán megkezdték a hétvégén felhalmozódott, elhullott rák, rája, sügér és egyéb haltetemek eltávolítását az oaklandi Merritt-tó partjáról – írja a Sky News.
A tömeges halpusztulást az öbölben tavaly július óta terjedő káros algavirágzás okozta.
A mikroszkopikus algák olyan méreganyagokat termelhetnek, amelyek elpusztítják a halakat és veszélyessé teszik a kagylók fogyasztását, valamint szennyezik a vizeket. Az algák tömegeinek a pusztulás és lebomlása kimeríti a víz oxigénjét, ennek következtében az állatok elhagyják az életterüket, vagy elpusztulnak.
Nehéz egyértelműen megállapítani, hogy mi okozza az algák virágzását. Előfordulásuk egyes helyeken természetesnek tűnik, míg máshol emberi tevékenység eredménye, például a mezőgazdaságból származó tápanyagfelesleg, az ipari szennyezés vagy a túlzott műtrágyahasználat miatt szaporodnak el.

Megolvadtak a kifutópályák a brit légierő egyik bázisán. Nagy-Britanniában akkora hőség van, hogy a világtörténelemben most először adott ki vörös figyelmeztetést a meteorológiai szolgálat.
Felfüggesztette a működést London egyik reptere, a Luton, mert a példátlan hőség miatt hibák keletkeztek a kifutópályán – közölte a Sky News. A kifutópályán jelenleg is dolgoznak, hogy a reptér mihamarabb újra működni tudjon.
Nagy-Britanniában az extrém hőség miatt vészhelyzetet hirdettek ki, a meteorológiai szolgálat pedig története során először kényszerült vörös riasztást kiadni. Ugyanakkor a hőhullám még nem is tetőzött, azt keddre várják, 39 fok körüli hőmérséklettel.
A brit légierő számára is problémát okoz a hőség; a Sky tudósítása szerint az egyik legnagyobb bázison, a Brize Nortonon megolvadt a kifutópálya.
A hőhullám miatt a vonatközlekedés is akadozik: komoly esélye van, hogy a hőség miatt meghajlanak a sínek, így a vonatok csak csökkentett sebességgel közlekedhetnek, így például Leeds és London között a megszokott két és fél óra alatt most öt órán át tart a vonatút.
A briteket arra biztatják, hogy tekintsenek el a nem létfontosságú utazásoktól.
Londonban több, a felszínen is közlekedő metrójárat működése szünetel, és van olyan vonattársaság, amely egyelőre nem ad ki újabb menetjegyeket. Vannak olyan kórházak is Angliában, amelyek lemondták a rutinvizsgálatokat és a halasztható műtéteket is a hőség miatt, és vannak iskolák is, amelyek bezártak, a tanári szakszervezet pedig közölte, támogatják azokat az igazgatókat, akik a bezárás mellett döntenek.
A brit meteorológiai szolgálat vezetője, Paul Davies közölte: nem árt, ha a britek hozzászoknak a „példátlan hőséghez”, mert „a század végére mindez rendszeressé válhat”.

Kína dél-középső részén már több százezer embert kellett kitelepíteni az áradások miatt.
Az áradások tovább súlyosbítják a gazdasági nehézségeket, amelyeket részben az utazásokat korlátozó és az ellátási láncokat megzavaró szigorú „zero-COVID” intézkedések okoznak.

Extrém hőség sújtja az Egyesült Államokat, főként a nyugati partvidéket. A kaliforniai Halál-völgyben pénteken 54,4 Celsius fokot mértek, és a héten is ilyen elképesztő meleget jósolnak – írja a BBC.
Ilyen meleget csak egyszer, tavaly augusztusban mértek a Halál-völgyben. A legtöbb szakértő ezt tartja a Földön valaha mért legmagasabb hőmérsékletnek. Van egy feljegyzés 1913-ból 56,7 fokról, de azt klímakutatók vitatják. (A Földön ennél melegebb is szokott lenni egyes helyeken, sivagatokban, de ott nincs mérőállomás.)
Las Vegasban 47,2 foknál eddig nem volt melegebb – de ezt is túlszárnyalhatja a jövő héten a hőség.
Az extrém meleg alig pár héttel követi az előzőt, ami Észak-Amerikát sújtotta.
Kanada egy része is ezzel néz szembe, igaz, ott az előrejelzések szerint nem fog megdőlni a Lytton településen június végén mért 49,6 fok. Az Kanadában a rekord.
A klímaváltozás magával hozza a szélsőséges időjárást, extrém meleg periódusok gyakrabban fognak előfordulni, és erdőtüzek is gyakrabban fognak kipattanni, olyanok, amik jelenleg is pusztítanak Kaliforniában.

Előző nap 40,9 fokos hőség volt a városban. Ez volt az első alkalom, hogy egy japán településen két egymást követő napon kúszott 40 Celsius-fok fölé a hőmérő higanyszála – írja az MTI a helyi meteorológiai ügynökségre hivatkozva.
Legutóbb 2018 júliusában volt hasonló forróság, akkor a Tokiótól északra található Kumagajában mértek rekordmeleget, ugyancsak 41,1 fokot. Jorii városában egy 94 éves férfi hőgutát kapott hétfőn, és meghalt – írta a Kyodo japán közszolgálati hírügynökség.
A fővárosban, Tokióban 53-an vesztették életüket a hőségben augusztusban – mondták el tisztségviselők. Sok áldozat idős volt. A hatóságok arra kérték a japánokat, hogy fogyasszanak sok vizet, és lehetőség szerint ne tartózkodjanak a szabadban.
