Egy hágai nemzetközi ügyész, Hashim Thacit, aki a szerbek ellen a koszovói függetlenségi háború idején elkövetett visszaéléseket vizsgálja, háborús bűnökkel vádolta meg a koszovói elnököt.
Kilenc másik egykori szakadár vezetőt is megvádoltak, köztük Kadri Veseli volt parlamenti elnököt, aki jelenleg a koszovói ellenzéki Demokrata Párt vezetője.
A vádak szerint Thaci és a volt szeparatisták közel 100 ember haláláért, köztük koszovói albánok, szerbek és romák megkínzásáért és eltűnéséért felelősek. A koszovói elnök katonai egységeket vezetett az 1998-99-es háborúban.
12 évvel ezelőtt a Hágai Nemzetközi Törvényszék (a volt Jugoszlávia területén elkövetett, a nemzetközi humanitárius jogot súlyosan sértő cselekményekért felelős személyek megbüntetésére létrejött Nemzetközi Törvényszék, ICTY) felmentette a volt koszovó miniszterelnököt, Ramush Haradinajt a háborús bűnök vádja alól. A bírók szerint ugyanakkor bizonyítékok voltak arra, hogy a Koszovói Felszabadítási Hadsereg katonái háborús bűnöket követtek el.
A fegyveres konfliktusban több mint tízezren vesztették életüket, és 1600 embert továbbra is eltűntként tartanak nyilván.
