Április óta több mint 17 ezer menedékkérő érkezett buszokkal New Yorkba elsősorban Texasból. Eric Adams, a város polgármestere szerint a sok menekült érkezése humanitárius válságot okozott a városban, emiatt pedig szükségállapotot hirdetett – írja az AlJazeera.
A demokrata politikus szerint ebben az évben több mint egymilliárd dollárt fordítanak a menekültek lakhatására, egészségügyi ellátására és más segítségnyújtásra, ez pedig kimerítette a város erőforrásait. Nem ő az első, akinek hozzá kell nyúlnia a város tartalékaihoz: egy hónappal ezelőtt Muriel Bowser, Washington polgármestere is közegészségügyi vészhelyzetet hirdetett, hogy felszabadítson tízmillió dollárt a menekültek ellátására.
Adams szerint a dél-amerikai erőszakhullám és instabilitás miatt indultak útnak ennyien az Egyesült Államok felé. A legtöbben Venezuelából, Kubából, vagy Nicaraguából indulnak útnak. A menekülteket Texasból buszoztatják New Yorkig, majd leszállás után semmilyen további segítséget nem adnak nekik – mondta a polgármester. A buszoztatást Greg Abbott, Texas republikánus kormányzója kezdeményezte, aki kifejezetten a demokraták vezette városokba, például Washingtonba, vagy Chicagoba irányítja át a menekülteket, hogy felhívja a városvezetők figyelmét arra, hogy egyre több ember érkezik Mexikó felől.

Az egészségügyi tisztviselők szerint New York Cityben és négy szomszédos megyében a szennyvízminták pozitívak a poliovírusra, amely bénulást okozhat − írta meg a BBC.
Bár eddig csak egy esetet erősítettek meg, közel egy évtizede nem volt már erre példa az országban.
A gyermekbénulást az 1955-ben megkezdett védőoltásokkal nagyrészt sikerült felszámolni az Egyesült Államokban, amelyet 1979-re gyermekbénulás-mentesnek nyilvánították.
New York-i tisztviselők szerint azonban az állam egyes részein túl alacsony az oltási arány. A pénteki sürgősségi nyilatkozat célja a lankadó immunizálási arányok növelése.
A gyermekbénulás ellen nincs gyógymód, de a vakcinával megelőzhető. A főként gyermekeket érintő vírus jellemzően izomgyengeséget és bénulást, a legsúlyosabb esetekben pedig maradandó fogyatékosságot és halált okoz.
New York állam egészségügyi minisztériuma közölte, hogy a jelenlegi 79 százalékos átlagról 90 százalék fölé kívánja emelni az oltási arányt.
A gyermekbénulással kapcsolatban egyszerűen nem kockáztathatunk. Ha Ön vagy gyermeke oltatlan vagy nem naprakész az oltásokkal, a bénulásos megbetegedés kockázata valós − mondta Mary Bassett egészségügyi biztos egy nyilatkozatában.
Hozzátette, hogy minden egyes igazolt paralitikus gyermekbénulásos esetre több száz másik fertőzött is juthat.
Az Egyesült Államokban és az Egyesült Királyságban is inaktivált gyermekbénulás elleni vakcinát használnak a rutin gyermekkori program részeként. Az Egyesült Államok járványügyi hivatala (CDC) oltási adatai szerint a kisgyermekek 93 százaléka kapott legalább három adag gyermekbénulás elleni oltást.
A hatóságok azután kezdték el ellenőrizni az államban a poliovírus miatt a szennyvizeket, hogy júliusban a New York Citytől északra fekvő Rockland megyében egy be nem oltott férfi megfertőződött a vírussal − ez volt az első feljegyzett eset 2013 óta −, és bénulást szenvedett.

A világhírű indiai írót éppen bemutatta a moderátor a körülbelül 2500 fős közönsége előtt, amikor egy fekete ruhát és fekete maszkot viselő férfi a pódiumra ugrott és késsel többször megszúrta. Mentőhelikopterrel vitték a pittsburghi egyetemi kórházba, ahol megműtötték. Ügynöke, Andrew Wylie közlése szerint a késszúrások miatt Salman Rushdie elveszítheti az egyik szemét, az egyik karjában átvágták az idegeket, és késszűrás érte a máját is. Az AP hírügynökség helyszínen tartózkodó riportere szerint a merénylője 10-15-ször szúrta meg.
Bár a merénylő indítékát nem nevezték meg, Salman Rushdie fejére istenkáromlás miatt 1989 óta vérdíj van kitűzve az iszlám világban az egy évvel korábban megjelent regénye, a Sátáni versek miatt. Az erről szóló fatvát még a néhai Ruhollah Homeini iráni ajatollah adta ki, a vérdíj összege 3,3 millió dollár körül mozog. Az ajatollah hivatala legutóbb 2019-ben erősítette meg, hogy a fatva hatályban van.
Salman Rushdie merénylőjét a helyszínen ártalmatlanították, őrizetbe vették, néhány órája pedig meg is nevezték. Egy Hadi Matar nevű, a New Jersey-i Fairview-ban élő 24 éves férfiról van szó, aki jegyet váltott Salman Rusfie előadására a Chautauqua Institute nevű kulturális központban. Facebook-oldalát azóta törölték, de tele volt szórva Iránnal szimpatizáló, Ruhollah Homeini iránti rajongásról árulkodó üzenetekkel.
A Sátáni versek Salman Rushdie negyedik regénye volt. Man Booker-díjra jelölték miatta 1988-ban, de nem nyert, csak három évvel később a függetlenség kikiáltása utáni Indiát bemutató Az éjfél gyermekei című művével.

A világhírű indiai születésű brit írót előadása előtt egy férfi támadta meg, a nyakán érte a szúrás.
Előadása előtt megtámadták Salman Rushdie-t New Yorkban. A világhírű, indiai származású brit írót éppen felkonferálták a Chautauqua Intézet színpadán, amikor az AP helyszíni tudósítójának beszámolója szerint egy férfi rohant fel a színpadra, és rátámadt.
A BBC idézi a New York-i rendőrség közleményét, mely megerősítette, hogy Rushdie-t megkéselték, az egyik szúrás a nyakán érte. Az írót helikopterrel kórházba szállították, állapotáról egyelőre többet nem lehet tudni. A rendőrség szerint a támadót őrizetbe vették. Rushdie színpadi beszélgetőtársa is könnyebben megsérült a fején.
A helyszínen készült fotón az látszik, hogy a 75 éves író a földön fekszik, többen körülötte állnak, lábait pedig a magasba emelik.
A Daily Beastnek egy szemtanú azt mondta, hogy a támadás akkor történt, amikor Rushdie éppen leült.
„Először azt hittem, hogy ütlegeli, de aztán rájöttem, hogy késelés történik” – mondta a férfi, aki szerint azonnal többen is a színpadra rohantak. Néhányan a támadóra ugrottak, mások pedig Rushdie-t kezdték ápolni.
A BBC-nek a Buffalo News tudósítója – aki több szemtanúval is beszélt – azt mondta, hogy a támadó a közönség soraiból szaladt a színpadra, és egy fekete maszk volt rajta. Az írónak azonnal 10-15 ember sietett a segítségére. Rushdie körülbelül öt percet feküdt a földön, majd felsegítették és saját lábán hagyta el a színpadot, majd mentőhelikopter vitte kórházba.

A The New York Timesnak nyilatkozott egy orvos is, aki a helyszínen segített ellátni az áldozatot a késelés után. Rita Landman szerint Rushdie-t számos szúrás érte, ezek egyike a nyaka jobb oldalán. Hozzátette azt is, hogy az író teste alatt vértócsa volt, de nem kellett újraéleszteni, és volt pulzusa.

Rushdie Sátáni versek című regényét 1988 nyarán adták ki, mely azonnal felháborodást váltott ki az iszlám világban Mohamed próféta „tiszteletlen” ábrázolása miatt. Egy évvel később Khomeini ajatollah, Irán vezetője fatvát hirdetett Rushdie ellen istenkáromlás miatt és minden hívő muszlimot felszólított Rushdie kivégzésére. Az író emiatt egy ideig bujkálni is kényszerült, hiszen a vallási rendelet értelmében bármely hívő muszlim megölheti őt. Az iráni radikális vezetők szerint Khomeini fatvája visszavonhatatlan, és 1989-ben bekövetkezett halála utána is érvényes.
Az író fejére Iránban több mint 3 millió dolláros vérdíjat tűztek ki.

New York városának vezetése közegészségügyi veszélyhelyzetet hirdetett a majomhimlő terjedése miatt helyi idő szerint szombaton, a várost a járvány gócpontjának nevezve.
A metropolisz akár 150 ezer lakója lehet veszélyeztetett – idézte a brit The Guardian online kiadása Eric Adams polgármestert és Ashwin Vasan egészségügyi vezetőt. A veszélyhelyzet bejelentése lehetővé teszi, hogy a fertőzés terjedésének lassítására sürgősségi rendeleteket adjanak ki és intézkedéseket hajtsanak végre a városi egészségügyi törvény alapján.
Az elmúlt két napban New York állam kormányzója, Kathy Hochul katasztrófahelyzetet hirdetett, az állam egészségügyi hivatala a majomhimlőt a közegészségügyet közvetlenül fenyegető veszélynek nevezte.
New York államban péntekig 1345 esetet regisztráltak, a második legtöbb fertőzést, 799-et Kaliforniában igazolták az amerikai járványügyi központ (CDC) adatai alapján.
Az ENSZ Egészségügyi Világszervezete (WHO) globális egészségügyi veszélyhelyzetnek nyilvánította a majomhimlőt július 23-án. Csütörtökön San Francisco polgármestere szükségállapotot hirdetett az esetek növekvő száma miatt.
A nemrég még ritka betegség Közép- és Nyugat Afrika egyes részein évtizedek óta létezik, de májusig nem volt ismert, hogy Afrikán kívül is okozott volna nagyobb járványt. Májusban Európában, Észak-Amerikában és más területeken regisztrálták járványok kitörését.
Azóta majdnem 80 ország több mint 22 ezer esetét jelentették, Afrikában – mindenek előtt Nigériában, és Kongóban – nagyjából 75 haláleset gyanúja merült fel. Pénteken Brazília és Spanyolország jelentett egy-egy olyan halálozást, mely a majomhimlőhöz köthető. Spanyolországban szombaton egy második halálozás is történt.
A majomhimlőt okozó vírus bőrfelületek hosszan tartó érintkezésével, ágynemű, törölköző és ruházat közös használatával terjed.
A jelenlegi járványban azonosított vírus ritkán vezet halálozáshoz, a fertőzöttek általában néhány hét alatt meggyógyulnak, azonban a vírus okozta bőrelváltozások és hólyagok fájdalmasak. A kórokozó a sérülékenyebb – többek között legyengült immunrendszerű emberek és várandós nők – esetében kelt aggodalmat.

A 15 és 16 éves gyanúsítottak ellen testi sértés és súlyos zaklatás miatt indítottak eljárást a július 9-i csúnya támadás miatt, amelynek következtében az 57 éves áldozat, Jill LeCroix fejét három kapoccsal tudták összetűzni – írja a New York Post.
Mindkét vádlott ellen gyűlölet-bűncselekmény lesz a vád. A New York-i rendőrség hozzátette, hogy egy harmadik gyanúsítottat még keresnek.
A buszon utazó LeCroix-t, aki ötgyermekes nagymama, három női támadó közelítette meg, akik a rendőrség szerint egy ismeretlen tárggyal fejbe vágták, ami vérzést okozott, miközben fehérellenes kijelentéseket tettek.
LeCroix a hónap elején, a támadást követően a The Postnak elmondta, hogy a három gyanúsított azzal vádolta őt, hogy Donald Trump elnök támogatója, az egyik támadó pedig azt mondta neki, hogy „utálja a fehér embereket, ahogy beszélnek, utálja a fehér bőrt, ahogy a bőrük repedezik”.

Andrij Meleskov Észak-Ukrajnában született és nevelkedett, később költözött csak az Egyesült Államokba. Nemrég egy brooklyni bárban ünnepelte egyik barátja születésnapját, amikor a 31 éves Oleh Sojma leült az asztalukhoz, és elkezdte sértegetni őt és a társaságot.
A kötekedő ukrán férfi ezt követően azzal vádolta Meleskovot, hogy orosznak néz ki, ő pedig hiába bizonygatta, hogy ukrán. A társalgás eddig a pontig orosz nyelven zajlott.
A társaság viszont a feldühödött férfi megnyugtatásának érdekében átváltott ukrán nyelvre, de ez sem volt elegendő bizonyíték. Oleh arra kérte az asztalnál ülőket, hogy különböző orosz szavakat fordítsanak le neki ukránra.
Majd azt akarta, hogy egy, az orosz anyanyelvűek számára kifejezetten nehezen kimondható szót mondjanak ki.
„Ha elhibázzátok, akkor elbánok veletek” – mondta a férfi.
A társaság ekkor úgy döntött, hogy a konfrontáció helyett inkább fizet és távozik a bárból, a férfi azonban erre egyre dühösebb lett, felkapott két sörösüveget, eltörte őket, majd kijelentette: „Készen állok megölni titeket.”
A feldühödött férfi ezt követően a társaságra támadott, az egyiket közülük pedig nyakon szúrta az éles üveggel. Meleskov szerencséjére túlélte az esetet, 17 öltéssel kellett összevarrni a nyakát, a New York-i rendőrség pedig gyűlölet-bűncselekmény miatt indított eljárást az ügyben.

Az esetről videófelvétel is készült: egy maszkot nem viselő fiatalember minden előzmény nélkül a sínekre lökte az előtte álló nőt, aki nagyot esett, és nem is tudot egyből felkelni a síneken.
A peronon lévő többi utas azonnal jelezte a közeledő metróvezetőnek, hogy a sínen van valaki, így a sofőr még időben meghúzta a vészféket.
Az elkövető rögtön elmenekült a helyszínről, de a rendőrség hamar beazonosította és őrizetbe vette. A 23 éves férfi ellen szombaton emberölési kísérlet miatt emelt vádat a bíróság. A francia állampolgárságú férfi indítékai pedig egyelőre nem ismertek. A bíróság döntése alapján most pszichiáter vizsgálja, hogy milyen mentális állapotban van a fiatalember.
New Yorkban egy negyven éves nő halt meg, miután egy férfi a metró alá lökte őt a manhattani Time Square megállónál.
A feltételezett elkövető elhagyta a helyszínt, de nem sokkal később jelentkezett a rendőrségen – számolt be a The Guardian.
Az incidens előzmények nélkül történt, az áldozat és a tettes között semmiféle kapcsolat vagy interakció nem volt – mondta Keechant Sewell rendőrkapitány, aki a polgármesterrel, Eric Adamsszel közösen tartott sajtótájékoztatót az érintett metróállomáson.
Egy szemtanú szerint a férfi hozzá is közeledett és úgy érezte, a férfi igyekszik belökni őt a sínekre. Neki végül sikerült elsétálnia, ám visszanézve látta, ahogy a férfi belök egy másik nőt a szerelvény elé. A gyanúsított nevét egyelőre nem közölték, de annyit igen, hogy van bűnügyi előélete, jelenleg is feltételesen volt szabadlábon.
