A közlemény nem említett sok részletet az esti támadással kapcsolatban, mindössze annyit tárt fel, hogy a rakéták egyike egy iskolába csapódott be. Azt sem tudni, hogy a nő és a gyermek az iskolában tartózkodott-e.
Az iraki hadsereg egy külön közleményben tudatta a Reuters globális hírügynökséggel, hogy két-három rakétát lőhettek ki a nagykövetség ellen, és legalább két lövedéket sikerült megsemmisítenie a diplomáciai képviselet rakétaelhárító rendszerének.
Az utóbbi években tucatnyi – és az idei év elején is már több – támadást hajtottak végre amerikai csapatok által használt támaszpontok és diplomáciai létesítmények ellen Irakban és Szíriában is. A háttérben az Irán támogatását élvező milíciákat sejtik. Az eddigi támadások alig okoztak károkat.
Az idén az incidensek hulláma Kászim Szulejmáni halálának második évfordulóján kezdődött. Az Egyesült Államok 2020. január 3-án dróntámadással likvidálta Szulejmánit, az iráni Forradalmi Gárda al-Kudsz elitegységének vezetőjét Bagdadban. A támadásban az Irán támogatását élvező Népi Mozgósítási Erők nevű, iraki síita milícia egyik vezetője, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandisz is meghalt. Irán már akkor megfogadta, hogy bosszút fog állni.
Teherán a Forradalmi Gárda külföldi műveletekért felelős alakulatán, illetve az iszlám köztársasághoz fűződő milíciákon keresztül bír jelentős befolyással az iraki és a szíriai viszonyokra.
