Вони використовують закон про боротьбу з тероризмом і закон про боротьбу з кіберзлочинністю, який може криміналізувати будь-яку публікацію, яка навіть віддалено критикує уряд», — заявив Абдулла Алауд, директор з досліджень регіону Перської затоки у правозахисному центрі Dawn.
Британська правозахисна група ALQST також висловила серйозне занепокоєння з приводу вироку Кахтані, який був «заснований на її твітах».

Вона у соціальних мережах закликала до реформ та до звільнення відомих активістів та інтелектуалів, увʼязнених у ході придушення інакодумства під наглядом наслідного принца Мухаммеда бін Салмана. Тюремний термін для аль-Шехаб був найдовшим, який колись призначали мирному активісту в країні, поки не стало відомо про увʼязнення Кахтані.
