Egy 48 éves nő öt napot élt túl az ausztráliai bozótosban úgy, hogy nyalókát evett és egyetlen üveg bort ivott. A nő, mikor megtalálták, csak vizet és cigarettát kért a rendőröktől.
Lillian Ip egy rövidnek szánt útra indult, de egy rossz kanyar után zsákutcába került, és járműve elakadt a sárban. A nő alapvetően állítása szerint nem iszik, de egy üveg bor volt csupán az autójában, amit ajándékba akart adni.
De mivel öt nap alatt találtak rá már egy légi keresés közben, így felbontotta azt.
„Az első dolog, ami eszembe jutott, az a víz volt, és egy cigaretta. Hála istennek a rendőrnőnél volt egy cigaretta”– mondta Ip a 9News Australiának. A nő azt is elárulta, hogy már épp letett róla, hogy valaha is kijut élve.
Mivel elvesztette a reményt, hogy élve találják meg, levelet írt a családjának, amiben azt írta, hogy szereti őket.
A nőt a legközelebbi várostól mintegy 60 kilométerre találták meg, és egészségi problémái miatt nem tudott messzire gyalogolni, ezért az autójánál maradt. A hatóságok szerint nagyon jól tette, ugyanis így könnyebb volt megtalálni.
A nőt először kórházba szállították kivizsgálásra, de azóta már hazaengedték.

Ötven éghajlatvédelmi aktivistát vádoltak meg jogellenes tiltakozással Ausztrália legnagyobb szénkiviteli kikötője közelében vasárnap, miután a tiltakozók felmásztak egy szenet szállító vonatszerelvényre.
Új-Dél-Wales állam rendőrsége közölte, hogy 47 aktivistát a vasúti közlekedés akadályoztatásával, két társukat rosszindulatú rongálással, míg további társukat pedig egy biztonsági őr megtámadásával vádoltak meg a Newcastle város közelében lévő kikötő közelében történtek miatt.
Az eset az állam fővárosától, Sydneytől mintegy 170 kilométerre északkeletre történt egy engedély nélküli tiltakozás alkalmával.
A megmozdulás szervezéséért a Rising Tide (Emelkedő árdagály) nevű klímaaktivista csoport vállalata a felelősséget. A csoport húsz tagja felmászott a vonatra, és lapátokkal igyekezett kipakolni a szénnel megrakott vagonokat – derült ki a szervezet közleményéből.
A rendőrség szerint 14 aktivista mászott fel egy vasúti kocsira.
Az éghajlatváltozás megosztó kérdés Ausztráliában, a világ legnagyobb szénexportőr országában. A balközép munkáspárti kormány nem támogatja az összes új fosszilis tüzelőanyag-projekt betiltását. Az ausztrál parlament ugyanakkor március 30-án fogadta el azt a törvényjavaslatot, amely az ország legnagyobb üvegházhatású gázkibocsátó vállalatait a szennyezés jelentős csökkentésére, illetve szén-dioxid-kvóták vásárlására kötelezi. A törvény értelmében 2030-ra 43 százalékkal csökkentik, 2050-re pedig nullára redukálják az országban a szén-dioxid-kibocsátást.
A Newcastle-i kikötő Ausztrália keleti partvidékének legnagyobb ömlesztett áruk kikötője, és az új-dél-walesi kormány szerint az ország legnagyobb szénkiviteli terminálja.
A tiltakozó csoport egy képet tett közzé a Twitter közösségi oldalon, amelyen a tüntetők egy szenet szállító vonat előtt és tetején láthatóak. A szerelvényre feltett transzparensen sürgették, hogy az országban mondjanak nemet a szénbányászatra és a szénerőművekre.
A csoport Twitteren közölte, hogy „leállította a szénszállítást” a kikötőbe, és követeli a Munkáspárttól, hogy „azonnal törölje az összes új szénprojektet”.

Az egyre hevesebb hőhullámok miatt több millió hal pusztult el az ausztráliai Darling folyóban, Új-Dél-Wales államban., Menindee falunál. A felvételeken látható, ahogy a folyó felszínét elpusztult halak borítják, motorcsónakkal is csak alig lehet közlekedni a vízen. A jelenségről először helyi idő szerint péntek reggel tettek bejelentést, a tragédia elsősorban heringeket érintett, de nagyobb testű halakat is találtak, köztük tőkehalakat, sügéreket, pontyokat.
A tömeges halpusztulás hátterében a térségben pusztító hőhullám áll, az akár 42 Celsius-fokos hőségben a folyó vize felmelegszik, a meleg víz pedig kevesebb oxigént tartalmaz, a halaknak viszont magasabb hőmérsékletnél több oxigénre van szükségük, így a hőség következtében megfulladnak.
A helyiek szerint ez az eddigi legsúlyosabb halpusztulás, amely eddig a falut érte, pedig három éve már is volt tömeges halpusztulás a Darlingon. Graeme McCrabb, a körülbelül 500 fős Menindee lakosa a BBC-nek nyilatkozva elmondta, még több hal pusztulásával számolnak: a felszínen úszó tetemek ugyanis további oxigént vesznek el a vízből. A 42 fokos melegben a bomló haltetemek bűze tovább nehezíti a helyzetet, „arról nem is beszélve, hogy mi, helyiek a folyó vizét használjuk mosáshoz és tisztálkodáshoz is, így az emberek most ezeket az alapvető dolgokat sem tudják megoldani” – mondta.

Döglött halak milliói lepték el az ausztrál Darling folyót, a rengeteg tetem teljesen betakarta a víz felszínét.
A nagyarányú halpusztulást először péntek reggel jelentették az új-dél-walesi Menindee városában.
Az állam folyami hatósága szerint ez a Darling-Baaka folyót sújtó, folyamatos hőhullám eredménye.
A helyiek azt mondják, hogy három éve folyamatos a halpusztulás, de ez a legnagyobb amit eddig láttak.
A hőhullámok gyakoribbak, egyre intenzívebbek és tovább tartanak az ember által előidézett klímaváltozás miatt – írja a BBC.
A helyiek arra számítanak, hogy még több hal fog elpusztulni, mivel a már lebomló halak több oxigént szívnak el a vízből.
Körülbelül 500 ember él a városban, akik a folyó vizét használják mosásra, zuhanyzásra, így a szennyezett víz miatt az alapvető szükségleteik sem biztosítottak.
A folyó vize amúgy is apad, mivel mezőgazdasági és ipari területeken is felhasználják, elszívják azt. 2012-ben több milliárd dollárt költöttek arra, hogy megakadályozzák a folyó kiszáradását és egészségesebb szintre állítsák vissza.

Egy kamaszlány vesztette életét egy nyugat-ausztráliai folyóban, két és fél kilométerre a tengertől.
A 16 éves lány a Perth városán át az Indiai-óceánba ömlő Swan-folyón vízirobogózott barátaival, amikor a tragédia történt.
A rendőrség szerint egy csapat delfint láttak a közelben, és a lány vélhetően azért szállt le a vízirobogójáról és ment bele a vízbe, hogy a játékos állatokkal együtt úszkáljon, ám egy ismeretlen fajhoz tartozó cápa megtámadta.
A lányt életveszélyes harapásos sérülésekkel emelték ki a folyóból,
és bár a hamar kiérkező mentők megpróbálták újraéleszteni, nem tudták megmenteni.
Halászok, vízirendőrök és más szakértők szerint szokatlan, hogy egy cápa ilyen messzire felússzon a folyón.

Az ausztrál hatóságok szerdán megtalálták a korábban eltűnt radioaktív kapszulát, miután csaknem egy hétig keresték egy 1400 kilométeres országút mentén – közölte a helyi katasztrófavédelmi tárca vezetője.
Stephen Dawson miniszter kijelentette, hogy a hadsereg ellenőrzi a sugárzó eszközt, és csütörtökön Perthbe, biztonságos létesítménybe szállítják. A politikus hangsúlyozta, hogy ha figyelembe veszik a kutatási terület nagyságát, a tárgy megtalálása óriási feladat volt. A keresőcsoportok valóban tűt találtak meg a szénakazalban – tette hozzá.
„A kapszula sugárzását egy speciális detektorral felszerelt, óránként 70 kilométeres sebességgel haladó járműről érzékelték” – közölte Nyugat-Ausztrália állam katasztrófaelhárítási hatósága. Ezután a hatóság munkatársai, sugárzási szakemberek és mások az országútnak a kiválasztott szakaszát fésülték át a szállítás közben eltűnt apró kapszulát keresve.
A kapszula egy olyan mérőeszköz része volt, amelyet a Rio Tinto Gudai-Darri bányájából származó vasérc betáplálási sűrűségének mérésére használtak az állam Kimberley régiójában. A szállítmány egy Perth külvárosában lévő létesítménybe tartott – ez a távolság nagyobb, mint Nagy-Britanniát átszelni északról délre.
Elvesztését január 25-én vették észre, amikor a szállítmány megérkezett a célállomására, egy raktárba. A tisztviselők szerint a kapszula nyilvánvalóan leesett egy teherautóról az út szélére.
Hozzátette, nem valószínű, hogy szennyeződés érte a térséget.

Murray Watt vészhelyzetkezelési miniszter az ausztrál rádióban csütörtökön elmondta, akár hetekig is tarthat még, mire ismét járhatóvá tudják tenni az elárasztott utakat Kimberley régióban Fitzroy Crossing kisvárosban és környékén.
A hadsereget mozgósítják az árvíz sújtotta térségben élők megsegítésére. A hatóságok Broome városban alakítottak ki befogadóközpontokat azoknak, akiknek az ítéletidő miatt el kellett hagyniuk otthonaikat.
A Horizon Power ausztrál áramszolgáltató közölte: elővigyázatosságból az érintett térségben lekapcsolták az áramot a szélsőséges mértékben megemelkedett vízszint miatt.
Ausztrália más területeiről is érkeztek hírek extrém időjárási jelenségekről. A keleti Queenslandben szerda éjjel több mint 200 ezer villámot észleltek, a vihar miatt Brisbane várostól északra több ezer ember maradt áram nélkül – jelentette a 9News rádió.
Az ország délnyugati részén, Nyugat-Ausztrália szövetségi államban, Newlands város környékén pedig bozóttűz tombol, amelyet a hatóságok szerint egyelőre képtelenek megfékezni.

Egy karácsonyi látogatásról hazafelé tartó ötfős család autóbalesetet szenvedett Nyugat-Ausztráliában. A két szülő meghalt, három gyermekük azonban túlélte a balesetet, és több mint 55 órán keresztül várt a 30 foknál is melegebb roncsban, ameddig megérkezett a segítség – adta hírül a Guardian.
A felborult autót végül a család barátai találták meg, az elhagyatott út mellett. A roncsot előtte senki sem vette észre az arra haladó autósok közül. A gyerekeket kiszáradva, de élve találták a kocsiban. Csodával határos túlélésükhöz az is hozzájárult, hogy az 5 éves kislány ki tudta kapcsolni 1 éves öccsének biztonsági övét. A középső, 2 éves testvért azonban még két nappal a baleset után is az ülésébe ragadva találták meg.
A gyerekeket a perthi gyermekklinikára szállították repülővel, ahol kezelést kaptak. Mindhárman stabil állapotban vannak.
A baleset körülményei egyelőre ismeretlenek, a hatóságok nyomoznak az ügyben. A család barátai adománygyűjtést indítottak, hogy finanszírozni tudják a temetés költségeit és a gyerekek jövőbeli kiadásait. Eddig már több mint 55.000 dollárnyi adomány érkezett.
