A New York-i bíróság 42 elrabolt és az Egyesült Államokba csempészett régészeti lelet visszaszolgáltatásáról döntött Olaszországnak 3,5 millió dollár értékben.
A kivételes – mintegy 2500 éves – műtárgyakat az amerikai nyomozók egy New York-i ünnepségen adták vissza az olasz hatóságoknak – derült ki Alvin Bragg, Manhattan kerületi ügyészének közleményéből.
„Folytatjuk az évtizedeken átívelő, jól szervezett csempész hálózatok által Olaszországnak okozott károk elhárítását” – közölte Bragg, megjegyezve, hogy már több mint 200 műtárgyat szolgáltattak vissza Rómának, amióta 2022-ben átvette a manhattani kerületi ügyészséget.
Vincenzo Molinese olasz csendőrtábornok üdvözölte az olasz-amerikai együttműködésnek köszönhető nyomozás nagy sikerét.
A visszaszolgáltatott művek között van egy i. e. 335-ben készült, az olaszországi Puglia régióból származó edény, amelyet a New York-i hatóságok szerint egy dél-itáliai temetkezési helyről loptak el.
A művet júliusban foglalták le egy New York-i magángyűjtőtől.
Két, az etruszk korból, i.e. 440-ből származó csempeképet az 1980-as években loptak el Közép-Olaszországban.
New Yorkban, a Metropolitan Művészeti Múzeumnak, valamint a Christie’s és a Sotheby’s aukciósháznak otthont adó városban a manhattani ügyészség 2017-ben indította a kampányt, amelynek célja visszaszolgáltatni az 1970 és 1990 között a világszerte lopott, Európába és az Egyesült Államokba csempészett, majd a New York-i múzeumokból és magángyűjteményekből lefoglalt műtárgyakat.
Bragg hivatali idejében eddig több mint ezer műtárgyat adtak vissza 185 millió dollár értékben 19 országnak, köztük Kambodzsának, Kínának, Indiának, Pakisztánnak, Egyiptomnak, Iraknak, Görögországnak, Törökországnak és Olaszországnak.

A nyomozók szerint a négy férfi kifejezetten Európába tartó bárkákat szemelt ki, majd ezeket más hajók segítségével a nemzetközi vizeken tartóztatta fel Tunézia partjai előtt, kifosztva az utasokat, elvéve mobiltelefonjaikat, pénzüket és egyéb értékeiket. A szemtanúk beszámolói szerint a késekkel felfegyverkezett bűnözők a bárkák motorjait is elvitték, sorsukra hagyva a tengeren hánykódó migránsokat.
Salvatore Vella, a szicíliai Agrigento főügyésze szerint a hatóságok arra figyeltek fel, hogy egyre több bárkának tűnt el a motorja. „A bizonyítékok egybevágtak azzal, amit a menedékkérők tanúvallomásukban mondtak nekünk, hogy tunéziaiak támadtak rájuk és vették el tőlük a hajtóműveket” – mondta.
„A lehető legtöbb információt szedtük össze, a tengeren avatkoztunk be, őrizetbe véve a férfiakat, akik egy halászhajóval tevékenykedtek” – tette hozzá.
Az olasz rendőrség szerint a halászhajón legalább három bárka motorját, több száz euró készpénzt és több tucat mobiltelefont találtak meg. Az olasz hatóságok a Montego Bayben született tengerjogi egyezmény alapján léphettek fel a nemzetközi vizeken működő kalózokkal szemben.
A négy férfit július 24-én vették őrizetbe, akiket azóta egy szicíliai börtönben tartanak fogva. A nyomozók most azt próbálják felderíteni, hogy egyedül cselekedtek-e, vagy embercsempészek megbízásából.
„Miért lopták el a hajtóműveket? Lehetséges, hogy megpróbálták továbbadni őket. De nem zárhatjuk ki, hogy ezek a férfiak a tunéziai Szfaksz városának térségében működő embercsempészeknek dolgoztak, ahonnan a legtöbb menedékkérő indul Európába” – ismertette Vella.
„Végtére a bárkák legértékesebb alkatrészei a motorok” – mondta az ügyész, hozzáfűzve, hogy teljességgel elképzelhető, hogy a kalózok azért lopták el a motorokat, hogy más migránsbárkákon újrahasznosíthassák őket.

Ismét Lampedusa szigeténél történt a tragédia, ahol alig néhány nappal ezelőtt kötött ki egy 172 migránst szállító hajó, melyen 55 kísérő nélküli fiatalkorú, köztük két csecsemő is volt.
Ezúttal azonban voltak, akik már nem értek partra a hajóval, és a kikötést megelőzően a tengerbe zuhantak. Az olasz hatóságoknak 31 embert sikerült kimenekíteniük, azt egyelőre nem tudni, hogy hányan tűnhettek el – írja az ANSA hírügynökség.
Az olasz kormány tovább küzd az embercsempészek ellen Az eddigi információk szerint a hajó a tunéziai Sfaxból indult, és alig hét méteres volt. Habár nem tisztázott, hogy hányan utazhattak rajta, vélhetően többszörösen túlterhelték, ezért is következhetett be a tragédia.
A hatóságok vizsgálják a baleset körülményeit, arról egyelőre nem esett szó, hogy a kimentett migránsokat hol szállásolják majd el.
Giorgia Meloni korábban elmondta, hogy kormánya tovább folytatja a harcot az emberkereskedők ellen, céljuk pedig az, hogy megtörjék a „harmadik évezred rabszolgaságát”, melyeket a csempészek bűnbandái működtetnek.

Az Euronews szerint a The Borderline YouTube csatornának több mint 600 ezer követője és több millió megtekintése van. A 20 éves sofőrrel szemben emberölés bűntette miatt indítottak eljárást, de a nyomozók még vizsgálják az ügyet.

A hajó vasárnap este borult fel Sesto Calende és Arona települések között. Az olasz tűzoltóság azt közölte, hogy húsz embert mentettek ki a vízből, nekik nincsenek súlyos sérüléseik. Egy embert továbbra is keresnek. Mentőbúvárokat és egy helikoptert is bevetettek, hogy segítsenek a keresésben a tó déli végénél, több mentőautó és egy mentőhelikopter is a helyszínre érkezett.
Attilio Fontana, Lombardia régió elnöke szerint a „nagyon súlyos incidens” a rossz időjárás miatt következett be. A La Repubblica hírportál szerint a bérelt hajó 25 embert szállított, akik egy születésnapi partin vettek részt.
